Ex-Super Bowl QB Trent Dilfer regrets his HS coaching moment that went viral

Although his team won 62-7, former NFL QB Trent Dilfer became livid at something one of his football players did during Lipscomb Academy's victory over Independence on Friday.

Dilfer has been the head varsity coach at the Nashville, Tennessee, private school since 2019. Over the weekend, a video of Dilfer losing it on tight end Beau Dawson circulated online.

"I take full responsibility as the head coach and leader of our team for not deescaltaing (sic) an emotional situation with one of our players," Dilfer said in a statement released by the football team's social media accounts.

Dilfer, who won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens, can be seen on video getting in the face of Dawson, who was lightly shoved by Dilfer and then backed away from his irate coach.

"Sit down! Sit down!" the 49-year-old Dilfer can be heard yelling. Details on what sparked the tirade are unknown.

"During a moment of frustration and in an attempt to get our team to play with more discipline, I unfairly singled Beau out," Dilfer said in his statement. "Somehow Beau Dawson has been portrayed publically (sic) as the culprit in this situation, when in reality, I should have been a better leader and shown greater wisdom and discernment in how I handled this incident.

"Overall, I could not be more proud of Beau and the rest of our team for how they handle the emotional nature of each game they compete in."

Former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer talks to the Elite 11 quarterbacks before the start of the football camp for high school football players.

Dawson is the son of former NFL kicker Phil Dawson, who serves as Lipscomb's special teams coordinator

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Dilfer sixth overall out of Fresno State in the 1994 draft. He took over as the starter in his second year and stayed with Tampa Bay through 1999.

Dilfer joined the Ravens for the 2000 season, and he went 11-1 under center to help the Ravens wi the Super Bowl. His last season in the NFL was 2007 following stints with the Seattle Seahawks (2001-04), the Cleveland Browns (2005) and the San Francisco 49ers (2007).

Dilfer's Lipscomb team has now outscored its first two opponents of the season 138-14 to start the season; the Mustangs won 76-7 over Greater Atlanta Christian School in the opener.

When he's not coaching high school players, Dilfer mentors the next generation of quarterbacks through the Elite 11 program. He also helped Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa through his pre-draft process as the former Alabama quarterback recovered from a hip injury.
