Texans DE Jerry Hughes says tie with Colts is 'great opportunity to learn'

The Houston Texans gave up a 17-point fourth quarter lead over the Indianapolis Colts, and had to settle for a 20-20 tie Sunday in Week 1 at NRG Stadium.

After 70 minutes of game time, the two AFC South foes couldn’t determine a winner and loser, and both clubs have a share of first place in the division at 0-0-1.

Coach Lovie Smith explained after the game why he decided to play for a tie near the end of the Texans’ final offensive drive in overtime.

Defensive end Jerry Hughes told reporters after the game he had an accord with his coach regarding the decision and the overall process of accepting a tie after a hard fought game.

"I agree with Coach," Hughes said. "It’s going to give us a great opportunity to learn. The new overtime rules were put into effect this evening, so that gives us another opportunity to learn how to play in the fifth quarter there. But for us it’s just all about finishing. It’s something that Coach preached all training camp, and we’ve still got to figure out a way to do that."

Even though the Texans weren’t able to get the win, Hughes believes the team needs to turn the page and prepare for the Denver Broncos, who they face on the road in Week 2.

"We got the Broncos coming up fast, so, we’ve got to turn the page and get ready for those guys," said Hughes, who finished with 2.0 sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception. “And we’ve got to finish because in this league if you don’t, the fourth quarter can turn the game open."

The Texans’ tie is their first in franchise history. With the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans both losing in Week 1, and the fact a tie counts technically as a half-win in NFL standings, the Colts and Texans are both leading the AFC South.
