The Pittsburgh Steelers put on a defensive show versus the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, starring defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick.

For that performance, the NFL honored Fitzpatrick with AFC Defensive Player of the Week. It’s the first time in his career that he’s been given that distinction.

"I came in wanting to make a statement," Fitzpatrick said after the game. "I felt like last year, it wasn’t a normal year for me."

Fitzpatrick shined in all facets against the Bengals. He recorded a career-high 14 tackles including a pick-six (the fourth of his career) and a blocked PAT that sent the game into overtime.

The timely plays helped propel the Steelers to a 23-20 victory. Pittsburgh held Cincinnati to just 14 points after halftime. Fitzpatrick scored the Steelers first touchdown by intercepting Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow in the first quarter.

Fitzpatrick jumped in front of a pass intended for Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd. He broke on the route and returned the interception for 31-yard touchdown

Later, he blocked a potential game-winning PAT attempt. He sprinted through the gap and denied Bengals kicker Evan McPherson. The Steelers went on to win in overtime behind a 53-yard field goal from Chris Boswell.

This offseason, Fitzpatrick signed a new five-year deal with the Steelers. He became the highest-paid safety in the league. The Steelers initially acquired Fitzpatrick in a 2019 trade with the Miami Dolphins.

"I really like it here. I have been playing well the last three seasons, at a high level," Fitzpatrick told the Steelers official website after signing his new deal. "I love the atmosphere, the coaching, the tradition. Being able to continue that for the next few years is definitely a blessing."

After a strong Week 1 performance, Fitzpatrick has made a statement that could set the tone for the 2022 season.
