Police name third victim, person of interest in fatal stabbing of NFL quarterback's brother

Nashville Tennessean

NASHVILLE, Tenn. β€” Nashville police have identified a person of interest in the Saturday morning stabbing that killed two men -- including the brother of NFL quarterback C.J. Beathard --  outside a Midtown bar. Meanwhile police also identified the third stabbing victim.

Authorities believe that Michael D. Mosley was at The Dogwood Bar on Division Street at the time of the stabbings and want to question him.

Police have not yet identified suspects but released surveillance footage of three men and a woman of interest. Mosley is one of those in the surveillance video, police said.

The third victim was identified by police as Alvin Jefferson "A.J." Bethurum, 21, who survived the stabbing with injuries to his eye and arm.

Bethurum is a current University of Tennessee student.

The two men killed were Clayton Beathard, 22, and Paul Trapeni III, 21.

The fatal attack started as an argument "over an unwanted advancement made by a man toward a woman in the bar," said a statement from Nashville police.

C.J. Beathard, the 49ers backup quarterback, left the team to return to the Nashville area to support his family after the Saturday morning stabbing, the team announced in a statement released on Twitter.

The team statement read: "The 49ers family was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragedy involving C.J. Beathard's younger brother, Clayton. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to C.J. and the entire Beathard family as they cope with the unthinkable loss of a loved one. C.J. has traveled home to join his family knowing he has the support of our entire organization as they grieve the passing of Clayton."

The 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday night in a game that tight end George Kittle, also an Iowa teammate of C.J. Beathard's, called "the toughest game of my career."

C.J. Beathard, like his brother, played at Battle Ground Academy outside Nashville. Trapeni and Bethurum also attended BGA.
