Bengals' A.J. Green undergoing concussion protocol

PITTSBURGH – Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green is being monitored under the NFL's concussion protocol after sustaining an injury late in the fourth quarter of Sunday night's loss against the Steelers, a team spokesman told USA TODAY Sports.

Green didn't return after a collision over the middle with Pittsburgh safety Mike Mitchell, which resulted in a fumble that squashed the Bengals' hopes for a comeback victory.

The team did not indicate that Green had definitively suffered a concussion. But after suffering a blow to the head, the NFL's concussion protocol dictates assessing that possibility.

After Sunday night's game, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis told reporters that he had no update on the condition of his offense's most potent threat.

Green's availability for Sunday's game at Indianapolis is unclear.

When seen in the locker room after the game, Green was not under the care of medical staff.

Under the conditions of the concussion protocol, if an assessment determines that a player suffered a concussion he would undergo further neurological tests and have to be cleared by an independent doctor before returning to practice and before being cleared to play in a game.
