Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive back Aqib Talib will miss the next four games after being suspended for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing substances.

Talib confirmed in a release by the team he tested positive for Adderall and chose not to appeal so he could begin serving the punishment immediately.

The suspension is the latest off-field issue for the team's first-round pick in 2008.

Talib was charged with hitting a cab driver in 2009 that led to a one-game suspension in the 2010 season opener for a violation of the league's personal conduct policy.

In 2011, he was arrested after being accused of firing a gun at his sister's boyfriend. Those charges were dropped this summer.

"This is especially regrettable because, for the past several months, with Coach Schiano's help, I've worked very hard to improve myself -- professionally and personally -- as a player and a man," Talib said in a statement. "I am truly sorry to my teammates, coaches and Buccaneers fans, and I'm disappointed in myself. I will work diligently every day of this suspension to stay in top football shape and be ready to help this team in the second half of the season."

Talib is fourth on the team with 21 tackles and has one interception through four games. He will be eligible to return after the Buccaneers face Oakland on Nov. 4.

"I have spoken with Aqib, and he knows that he made a poor decision that let our team down," Tampa Bay coach Greg Schiano said in a statement. "Certainly, other players will have the opportunity to step up while he serves this suspension."
