The worst news came to pass for New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard.

Head coach Brian Daboll confirmed Tuesday that Shepard suffered a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. This comes eight and a half months after Shepard suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon.

"I feel terrible for him," Daboll said.

The injury occurred in the final moments of Monday's 23-16 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. It was a non-contact injury.

After the game, the mood in the locker room was somber. Wide receiver Kenny Golladay got choked up and running back Saquon Barkley was visibly upset.

"Any player that gets taken off on a cart is not a good sight," Barkley said after the game. "Obviously, the relationship I have with Shep, it definitely hurts a little bit more. But at the end of the day, I'm his brother and I'm going to be there for him. I've dealt with something like that, you never know until you go in there and get an MRI.

"Always have high prayers whoever it is, and he knows I got his back and we have his back. We appreciate everything he does and the energy he brings to the team.

'DEFINITELY A GUT PUNCH ENDING':Emotional Giants let down Daniel Jones in loss to Cowboys

New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard (3) is carted off the field late in the second half. The Giants fall to the Cowboys, 23-16, at MetLife Stadium on Monday, Sept. 26, 2022.

Barkley continued: "Definitely a gut punch ending. It's tough. It's definitely tough. Especially just the type of guy 'Shep' is, his character, the energy he brings to this team. One of my best friends, if not my best friend. So, it sucks to see him go down."

In Shepard's absence, Daboll said the Giants will have to go with what they have, including a potential practice squad call-up. But even that will prove difficult as Wan'Dale Robinson (knee) and Kadarius Toney (hamstring) may not be ready for a Week 4 game against the Chicago Bears, Daboll added.
