Former Patriots receiver Chris Hogan signs with Panthers

The Carolina Panthers continue to bolster their skill position weapons, with the latest addition being a former New England Patriots pass catcher and key contributor to two Super Bowl championships.

The team announced Friday it is signing wide receiver Chris Hogan to a one-year contract.

Hogan, 31, played three seasons in New England and helped the team win titles in Super Bowl LIII and Super Bowl LI. He was a steady presence for quarterback Tom Brady, starting 28 regular-season games with the Patriots and compiling 107 receptions for 1,651 yards and 12 touchdowns in three seasons.

Hogan was a standout in the postseason leading up to Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons, catching 17 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns in three playoff games that year. His role, however, gradually diminished in New England, as he became more of a reserve option in the passing attack. In the 2016 regular season, Hogan’s 17.9 yards per catch was tied for the NFL’s best mark with then-Redskins receiver DeSean Jackson among players with at least 30 receptions.

Hogan joins a Panthers team that is trying to claw back to the playoffs and has infused speed and talent onto its offense over the past two offseasons. Hogan figures to be a contributor alongside receivers DJ Moore, Torrey Smith, Curtis Samuel and Jarius Wright. He also gives strong-armed quarterback Cam Newton another deep threat.

Before his time in New England, Hogan played three seasons for the Buffalo Bills from 2013-15, hauling in 87 catches for 959 yards and six touchdowns.
