Ray Rice tantalized by upcoming Raiders matchup

Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice rushes for three yards in the first quarter against the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
  • Ray Rice could be in line for a big game for the Ravens when they host the Raiders on Sunday.
  • The Raiders' defense gave up 251 yards and four touchdowns to Bucs RB Doug Martin last week.
  • Rice said missed tackles accounted for most of Martin's yards.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- You can imagine how Ray Rice felt as he watched the videotape this week of the Oakland Raiders' defense getting shredded by Doug Martin.

Maybe like the guy at the gym, declaring his spot for a pickup game.

I've got next!

Martin, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie, flat-blasted Oakland's 31st-ranked rushing defense for 251 yards and four touchdowns.

Now Rice will see that same defense on Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium.

Think Rice was salivating in the film room?

"Obviously, you look at it, and you do start getting excited when you see it happening," Rice said Wednesday. "First off, you want to know what happened -- why these kind of things happen. After looking at the film, it was just a lot of them missing tackles. It wasn't a lot of schemed-up things. (But) anybody that goes for over 200 yards, you have to figure there is a problem there."

Like Martin, the 5-foot-8 Rice -- who leads the AFC with 873 yards from scrimmage -- is a compact, powerful back with a low center of gravity and quick cutting ability.

He realizes he'll be a marked man on Sunday, particularly as the Raiders defense tries to correct itself. Rice said defenders were often in the proper positions against Martin, but the big game was keyed by yards after contact.

"I'm sure they will be addressing that this week," said Rice, who rushed for 98 yards and had a big fourth quarter in Sunday's victory at Cleveland.

Raiders coach Dennis Allen agreed that the tackling was faulty. Fixed?

"We'll find out on Sunday," Allen said. "We got a chance to talk about what we need to do and how we need to get things corrected. We have to tackle better. We've got another huge challenge this week."
