Report: Ex-Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu to sign with hometown team, the New Orleans Saints

The Honey Badger has reportedly found a new home, and it won't be far from where he played his college ball.

Safety Tyrann Mathieu is expected to sign a contract with the New Orleans Saints, according to multiple reports.

Mathieu, 29, is coming off of a three-year run with the Kansas City Chiefs in which he was a first-team AP all-pro twice and was selected to the Pro Bowl twice. He was born in New Orleans and grew up there, and starred for the LSU Tigers in Baton Rouge, La. in 2010-11.

ESPN was the first to report the news of the Saints' recent interest in Mathieu, after he visited with them in April.

The Saints had a need at the position after former safeties Malcolm Jenkins (retirement) and Marcus Williams (signed with Ravens in free agency) left the team this offseason.

Mathieu will be entering his 10th year in the NFL and has been a dependable and versatile playmaker at every stop. He got his start with the Arizona Cardinals (2013-17), who selected him in the third round of the 2013 NFL draft. He then went on to play with the Houston Texans (2018) before he signed with the Chiefs in March 2019. Mathieu was a key piece of the Kansas City defense, but earlier this offseason, the team signed safety Justin Reid to a three-year, $31.5 million deal, signaling the likely end to Mathieu's time there.

In 120 career games, Mathieu has totaled 610 tackles, including 41 for a loss, with 26 interceptions and 10 sacks. He has been appointed to the AP all-pro first team three times and is also a three-time Pro Bowler.
