Should Super Bowl MVP Trophy be renamed for Tom Brady?

I bet if you asked most people if they know the name of the Super Bowl MVP Trophy, you’d get blank stares.

You’d possibly get the rhetorical, “It’s not just called the Super Bowl MVP Trophy?”

However, it’s unlikely you’d get this answer: “The Super Bowl MVP Trophy is named the Pete Rozelle Trophy.”

I wonder how many sports fans know who Pete Rozelle is?

You have a better chance of knowing the name if you’re over age 40.

In fact, I bet you’d get another blank stare if you asked a person in their 20s or 30s.

Rozelle was the commissioner of the NFL from 1960-1989. He died in 1996.

His role in building the NFL to the juggernaut it is can’t be overstated.

During his tenure, Rozelle saw the NFL grow from 12 teams to 28, oversaw the creation of large television-rights deals and the creation of "Monday Night Football" in 1970, oversaw the 1970 NFL-AFL merger and the creation of the Super Bowl, and helped the NFL move from a 12-game schedule to its current 16-game schedule.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

I think it’s nice the Super Bowl MVP Trophy is named for Rozelle, but I think it’s time to find another way to commemorate him.

It's Brady's award

Awards such as this should be named after the best players who earned them.

I think it’s time we renamed the award the “Tom Brady Super Bowl MVP Award.”

After garnering the honor yet again Sunday by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 55, Brady has won the Super Bowl MVP five of the 10 times he’s played in the title game.

To put it into perspective, Tom Brady has played in 18% of all Super Bowls. He’s won the MVP in 9% of all Super Bowls. Ever. That’s 55 Super Bowls. Let that sink in.

Joe Montana is next with three Super Bowl MVPs. He played in four Super Bowls. No offense to Joe, but that pales in comparison.

Here’s another eye-opening stat: Tom Brady has won the same number of NFC championships as Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees, with one. He’s only been in the NFC for one season while Rodgers has played his entire career in the conference and Brees joined it in 2006.

I’m certainly not a Tom Brady homer. But I do recognize greatness. I also know what we are seeing now will likely never be accomplished again.

Think about it: another quarterback would have to come along, play for more than 20 years into his mid-40s and make at least 10 Super Bowls, win at least seven and garner at least five Super Bowl MVPs.

Does that sound possible? It almost sounds made up.

The move to change the trophy name wouldn't be without precedent.

In the NBA, the Finals MVP award was named after Bill Russell in 2005. Russell never got to win a Finals MVP award because it didn't exist until his final year in the league, but he won 11 NBA titles as a player.

In my mind, the biggest question becomes: should the trophy be renamed while Brady is still playing?

Imagine if next year the Buccaneers find themselves in the Super Bowl again. Could Tom Brady win an award named after himself?

I say: Yes!
