Real hockey: Canada invites 37 to world juniors camp

Usually at this time, hockey fans would be checking to see what their NHL teams did the night before.

But with NHL arenas dark because of the lockout, that gives other hockey a chance to jump into the spotlight.

So here's your daily hockey fix:

MONDAY, DEC. 3

What you missed: Two games, Buffalo at Toronto and Phoenix at Boston.

Real hockey: Canada invited 37 players to its Dec. 11-13 evaluation camp in Calgary in preparation for the world junior championships. It included six returnees from the team that won bronze last winter: Jonathan Huberdeau, Dougie Hamilton, Boone Jenner, Mark Scheifele, Scott Harrington and Ryan Strome. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the Edmonton Oilers' 2011 No. 1 overall pick who's playing in the American Hockey League during the lockout, was invited as were Halifax forwards Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin, who are expected to be top picks in the 2013 draft. The USA will name its preliminary team on Tuesday.

Montreal Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov had a Gordie Howe hat trick with a goal, assist and a fight in Vityaz Chekhov's game against Barys Astana. Markov has had only one fight in his NHL career.

SUNDAY, DEC. 2

What you missed: Seven games, including rivals New York Islanders at New York Rangers.

Real hockey: Curtis McElhinney tied the Springfield (Mass.) Falcons' shutout record, with five months of the season left to go. He blanked the Connecticut Whalers 5-0 on 34 shots to record his fifth shutout of the season. That tied Manny Legace's 1995-96 mark. McElhinney has made 16 appearances his season, with 11 wins.

Vancouver Canucks goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 40 shots for Ambri-Piotta as he beat Rapperswil-Jona 4-3 to win his Swiss league debut.

SATURDAY, DEC. 1

What you missed: 11 games, including Minnesota Wild at Nashville Predators. Ryan Suter would be playing his first game in Nashville since signing a 13-year, $98 million deal with the Wild in July. Minnesota's Zach Parise missed his return to New Jersey last month.

Boston College coach Jerry York, shown last season, has tied the NCAA ice hockey record with 924 wins.

Real hockey: Forward Bill Arnold scored twice as Boston College topped Boston University 5-2 and gave coach Jerry York his record-tying 924th NCAA win. York entered the weekend one win behind Ron Mason but his team lost to BU on Friday night. The top-ranked Eagles next play Friday at Providence College. "The record means nothing to him,'' BC captain Pat Mullane said, according to the Boston Globe. "As a group (Friday) night, we were obviously disappointed with the loss, more importantly disappointed we didn't give us a chance to break the record for him at home." York is 924-558-94 in 41 seasons as a head coach at Clarkson, Bowling Green and Boston College.

San Jose Sharks center Logan Couture is leaving Geneva-Servette in Switzerland for personal reasons. He had been on a two-month contract and scored seven goals and 16 assists in 22 games. "First class organization," Couture tweeted. "Enjoyed my time in Switzerland."

Dallas Stars forward Eric Nystrom boarded a flight for Norway. He'll play for Stavanger.

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin had a hat trick in Dynamo Moscow's win against Donbass Donetsk.

FRIDAY, NOV. 30

What you missed: Four games, including Los Angeles Kings at Columbus Blue Jackets: Jeff Carter sought a trade last season from the Blue Jackets and then won a Stanley Cup with the Kings.

Real hockey: The Portland Winterhawks won 5-2 in their first game since being hit with major sanctions, including the loss of draft picks and the suspension of general manager Mike Johnston. According to The Oregonian, fans wore "Free Mike" T-shirts.

Kings captain Dustin Brown had a big game in Switzerland with two goals and two assists in a win for Zurich.

Matt O'Connor made 35 saves as Boston University beat top-ranked Boston College 4-2.

THURSDAY, NOV. 29

What you missed: 11 games, including Washington Capitals at Florida Panthers. The Panthers ended the Capitals' four-season reign atop the Southeast Division.

Real hockey: The Western Hockey League, under pressure to explain why it suspended Portland Winterhawks coach Mike Johnston, fined the team $200,000 and took away numerous draft pick, said an independent study determined there were 54 violations involving 14 players over five seasons. "We believe the sanctions are not excessive given the repeated and systemic nature of the violations," WHL Commissioner Ron Robison said in a statement. "The independent investigation discovered an unprecedented number of violations. It is the responsibility of each WHL club and general manager to be fully aware of the WHL regulations and to be in compliance at all times." According to the Winterhawks, the perks including family flights, some training sessions and players being given cell phones. "The WHL is counting each flight, training session and phone as an individual infraction, adding up to 54," the team said. "The league's findings are consistent with the team's statement yesterday, and the Winterhawks are encouraging more transparency in this process."

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 28

What you missed: Three games, including Philadelphia Flyers at Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs dealt Luke Schenn to the Flyers for James van Riemsdyk.

Real hockey: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Joffrey Lupul's first Kontinental Hockey League goalie proved to be the winner as Avtomobilist Yekatinerburg ended a 14-game winless streak with a 6-3 victory against Dinamo Minsk.

TUESDAY, NOV. 27

What you missed: 11 games, including Edmonton Oilers at Nashville Predators. Predators defenseman Shea Weber is a Norris Trophy favorite and Oilers defenseman Justin Schultz could win rookie of the year.

Real hockey: Winnipeg Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec made his Finnish league debut but continued his struggles as the Lahti Pelicans fell 5-4. Pavelec was 4-10 with a 3.50 goals-average with Liberec in the Czech Republic.

MONDAY, NOV. 26

What you missed: Three games, including Vancouver Canucks at New York Rangers. The teams led their respective conferences last season.

Real hockey: Winnipeg Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec, who struggled in the Czech League, will try again in the Finnish league. He was signed by the Lahti Pelicans, the team where San Jose Sharks goalie Antti Niemi played earlier this season. He could make his debut on Tuesday.

Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Ryan Murray could need surgery for his injured shoulder, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

SUNDAY, NOV. 25

What you missed: Four games, including Washington Capitals at St. Louis Blues. New Capitals coach Adam Oates had some of his best seasons as a player with the Blues.

Real hockey: Houston Aeros rookie forward Jason Zucker tied an American Hockey League record by scoring five seconds into overtime. It was his second goal of the game and team-leading ninth of the season. The goal tied the tied the record set by Dave Saatzer of the Nova Scotia Voyageurs in 1980, and tied by Chris Corrinet of the Portland Pirates in 2002. "We just jumped up off that draw and (Johan) Larsson got a good step," Zucker said in a postgame interview. "He's been good on draws all year, so he got that win and just passed it over and i tried to get a shot on net and it went in for me."

The Kontinental Hockey League's SKA St. Petersburg fired coach Milos Riha, even though his team rallied to win for the sixth time in seven games and move atop the KHL standings.

SATURDAY, NOV. 24

What you missed: 10 games, including Anaheim Ducks at San Jose Sharks. If this is Teemu Selanne's farewell tour, he'd be appreciated by the fans because he spent two-plus season in San Jose.

Real hockey: Abbotsford Heat goalie Barry Brust extended his shutout streak to 268 minutes, 17 seconds, breaking the 1957 American Hockey League record of Hall of Famer Johnny Bower by more than 18 minutes. He made 26 saves in the 3-2 win against the San Antonio and improved to 5-0, with a 0.59 goals-against average and a .978 save percentage.

New York Islanders center John Tavares had two goals and four assists as Bern routed Biel in the Swiss league. Biel's Tyler Seguin scored his 20th goal of the season in that game.

Pittsburgh Penguins winger James Neal had four goals as the New York team beat the New Jersey team in a charity game between locked-out NHL players in Atlantic City.

FRIDAY, NOV. 23

Peter Forsberg will into the IIHF Hall of Fame with fellow Swede Mats Sundin.

What you missed: 11 games, including New York Rangers at Boston Bruins. This would have been NBC's first game of the season.

Real hockey: Sweden's Peter Forsberg and Mats Sundin highlight the latest inductees into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame. Forsberg, MVP of the NHL in 2003, was a double Triple Crown winner with world championships wins in 1992 and 1998, Olympic golds in 1994 and 2006 and Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001. His Olympic-winning shootout goal in 1994 was featured on a postage stamp in Sweden.

Sundin, inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame earlier this month, was captain of the 2006 Olympic championship team. He was the first European to be drafted first overall in the NHL.

Also named: Teppo Numminen, who won three Olympic medals with Finland and scored 637 points in the NHL; Paul Henderson, who scored the winning goal for Canada in the 1972 Summit Series; and Danielle Goyette, who won seven gold medals internationally with Canada's women's hockey team.

Jan-Ake Edvinsson, general secretary of the IIHF from 1986-2006, was named in the builders category and TSN broadcaster Gord Miller won the Paul Loicq award for his play-by-play work on the world junior championships and Olympics.

Induction will be May 19 during the world championships in Stockholm.

THURSDAY, NOV. 22

What you missed: Thanksgiving day is always light and this was no exception. Just one game: Vancouver Canucks at Ottawa Senators.

Real hockey: Senators prospect Ben Bishop stopped 46 shots as the Binghamton (N.Y.) Senators beat the Toronto Marlies 3-2.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 21

What you missed: 12 games, including Chicago Blackhawks at Los Angeles Kings. A meeting of a couple recent Stanley Cup champions.

Real hockey: Washington Capitals coach Adam Oates has ended his American Hockey League stint, the team said. He served as co-coach of the Hershey (Pa.) Bears to learn about some of the organization's youngsters, install his system there and get some experience as a head coach. Oates, a former Capitals star, was an assistant coach with the New Jersey Devils.

Buffalo Sabres prospect Mikhail Grigorenko scored twice to continue his hot streak for the Quebec Remparts. He has 20 goals and 20 assists in 22 games. He has five multiple-goal games, including a four-goal effort on Nov. 11.

TUESDAY, NOV. 20

What you missed: Four games, including Montreal Canadiens at New Jersey Devils. Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, a Montreal native, always seems extra motivated when facing the Canadiens.

Real hockey: Nicklas Backstrom scored twice for Dynamo Moscow, including the game-winner against Vityaz Chekhov. He has five goals in his past two games.

Patrik Bartosek made 43 saves in a 4-0 win by the Red Deer Rebels. The Western Hockey League team has gone 3-0 since Brent Sutter fired coach Jesse Wallin and went behind the bench.

MONDAY, NOV. 19

What you missed: Five games, including Nashville Predators at Montreal Canadiens. The Predators acquired defenseman Hal Gill from the Canadiens last spring. He re-signed with Nashville during the summer.

Real hockey: Defenseman Jaroslav Spacek announced his retirement, according to reports from the Czech Republic. He played 880 games for seven teams, totaling 82 goals and 273 assists. He twice scored 45 points in his career.

SUNDAY, NOV. 18

What you missed? Three games, including the southern California rivalry of Los Angeles Kings at Anaheim Ducks.

Real hockey: Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin scored the overtime winner for Dynamo Moscow against Dinamo Minsk.

SATURDAY, NOV. 17

What you missed? 11 games, including the Battle of Ontario, Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs

Real hockey: Defenseman Jared Cowen, who played all 82 games last season with the Ottawa Senators, had hip surgery and will be out six to eight months. He was playing in Binghamton, N.Y., during the lockout.

FRIDAY, NOV. 16

What you missed? New York Rangers at Washington Capitals. The second game of a home-and-home set between the 2012 second-round opponent.

Real hockey: Jonathan Drouin had four assists as the Halifax Mooseheads continued their offensive roll with an 8-3 against Rouyn-Noranda in the Quebec league. Drouin and potential No. 1 overall pick Nathan MacKinnon have combined for 72 points this season.

Abbotford (British Columbia) Heat goalie Barry Brust, who was up for an American Hockey League-record shutout streak, did not play.

Defenseman Ryan Murray, the No. 2 overall pick in June, hurt his shoulder in the Everett (Wash.) Silvertips' loss to Victoria.

THURSDAY, NOV. 15

What you missed: 11 games, including Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins. Sidney Crosby has nine goals in his past six games against the Leafs.

Real hockey: Abbotsford (British Columbia) Heat goalie Barry Brust has three consecutive shutouts, extending his streak to 231 minutes, 41 seconds. The American Hockey League record is 249:51 by Hall of Famer Johnny Bower. The Heat, the top affiliate of the Calgary Flames, next play Friday night at the Rochester (N.Y.) Americans.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 14

What you missed: Four games, including Washington Capitals at New York Rangers. The Rangers won a seven-game series in the second round last spring.

Real hockey: Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom changed his Dynamo Moscow number from 99 to 69 and scored a hat trick.

Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown scored a goal in his Swiss league debut. He's playing for Zurich's ZSC Lions.

Montreal Canadiens center Scott Gomez had the game-winning goal in his season debut with the ECHL's Alaska Aces. Last season, he managed just two goals in an injury-filled NHL season.

TUESDAY, NOV. 13

What you missed: 11 games, including New York Rangers at New York Islanders, a strong rivalry that will get even better when the Islanders move to Brooklyn in 2015.

Real hockey: Detroit Red Wings forward Valtteri Filppula sprained his knee and Los Angeles Kings defenseman Alec Martinez took a puck in the face in Finland. Filppula will miss six to eight weeks and Martinez will need surgery to repair a broken cheekbone.

MONDAY, NOV. 12

What you missed: Nothing. There were no games scheduled because of the Hall of Fame inductions.

Real hockey: Pavel Bure, Adam Oates, Joe Sakic and Mats Sundin were inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Nail Yakupov, who bolted the Sarnia Sting for the Kontinental Hockey League, returned to the Ontario city and scored a late third-period goal, but the Russian junior stars fell to the Ontario Hockey League stars 2-1. Yakupov was cheered before the game.

Former Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Pascal Leclaire announced his retirement, RDS reported.

SUNDAY, NOV. 11

What you missed: Four games, including Minnesota Wild at New Jersey Devils. Zach Parise would be making his homecoming after signing a 13-year, $98 million deal with the Wild on July 4.

Real hockey: The USA won more international tournaments. Vince Hinostroza had two goals and two assists at the U.S. junior select team beat Canada West 6-3 in the finale. It was the USA's fourth title in five years. Sonny Milano had two goals and an assist as the U.S. under-17 team clinched the Four Nations Tournament title with a 6-1 win against Switzerland.

New York Rangers forward Derek Stepan said he was going to play for KalPa in Finland's top league.

SATURDAY, NOV. 10

What you missed: 13 games, including Los Angeles at Columbus Blue Jackets. Jeff Carter asked for a trade last season and won a Stanley Cup with the Kings.

The USA's Kelli Stack defends against Canada's Vicki Bendus in the Americans' clinching 3-0 win in the Four Nations Cup.

Real hockey: Jesse Vetter made 26 saves and Kendall Coyne scored short-handed as the U.S. women's team beat Canada 3-0 to win the Four Nations Cup.

Thatcher Demko made 22 saves as the U.S. under-18 team clinched the Four Nations Tournament title with a 3-1 victory against Sweden.

FRIDAY, NOV. 9

What you missed: Three games, including New Jersey Devils at Toronto Maple Leafs, the annual Hall of Fame game.

Real hockey: Hamilton (Ontario) Bulldogs forward Blake Geoffrion was rushed to the hospital and had surgery for a depressed skull fracture after being hip checked by Syracuse (N.Y.) Crunch defenseman J.P. Cote. He was moved out of intensive care on Sunday and is expected to make a full recovery, the team said.

THURSDAY, NOV. 8

What you missed: 11 games, including Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles. The Kings knocked off the No. 1 overall Canucks in the first round on the way to becoming the first No. 8 seed to win the Stanley Cup.

Real hockey: Russia's junior stars ended an 18-game losing streak to the Ontario Hockey League in the Subway Super Series. Anton Shenfeld and Maxim Shalunov scored in the third period for a 2-1 win.

Olympic qualifying is starting up again, and the lockout gave a boost to Ukraine. NHL players Ruslan Fedotenko and Alexei Ponikarovsky each scored in a 7-0 rout of Spain. Both have been playing for Donbass Donetsk of the KHL.

WEDNESDAY, NOV. 7

What you missed: Three games, including Pittsburgh Penguins at Toronto Maple Leafs. Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby visiting the second-to-last-ranked defensive team of 2011-12.

Real hockey: Minnesota Wild forward Devin Setoguchi had two assists and was named first star in his debut with the ECHL's Ontario Reign. The Reign beat the San Francisco Bulls for their fourth win in a row.

Jonathan Huberdeau, Jonathan Drouin and Nathan MacKinnon combined for 11 points as the Quebec league beat Russian junior stars 5-2 to tie their series 1-1.

Hayley Wickenheiser and Gillian Apps had a goal and an assist each as Canada's women's team beat the USA 3-1 in the Four Nations Cup in Finland. Hilary Knight scored for the Americans.

TUESDAY, NOV. 6

What you missed: 11 games, including Florida Panthers at New Jersey Devils. The Devils overcame a 3-2 series deficit in the first round with two overtime wins. They won Game 7 in Florida on Adam Henrique's double-overtime goal.

Though the Red Bull team in Salzburg, Austria, said NHL players David Clarkson and Tobias Enstrom had left, Clarkson told the Bergen Record that wasn't the case yet. "We haven't left, but by the 12th there is a deadline where they can have so many guys on the roster," Clarkson told the newspaper. "I came over here to get into shape and to train, but I didn't come over here to take some guy's job when he has two kids or three kids. So, that's the decision I have to make. I haven't left yet, but I told the team I've really enjoyed it here, it's been a fantastic place to play, but I didn't want to take anyone's job."Real hockey: This is a busy week for USA Hockey and three teams picked up wins on Tuesday. The women's team beat Sweden 4-0 in the opener of the Four Nations Cup. The under-18 team topped Finland 3-1 in the Four Nations Tournament and the Americans beat Switzerland 4-3 in the World Junior A tournament, clinching their pool.

MONDAY, NOV. 5

What you missed: Three games, including Carolina Hurricanes at Florida Panthers. The Hurricanes beefed up their lineup (Jordan Staal, Alexander Semin) in order to challenge the Panthers for Southeast Division title.

Real hockey: Canada was routed twice in international tournaments. The USA's Ryan Fitzgerald had a first-period hat trick in a 9-1 win against Canada East in the World Junior A challenge. Nail Yakupov scored as the Russian All-Stars beat stars from the Quebec league 6-2 in the Subway Super Series. Yakupov had bolted the Canadian juniors for the Kontinental Hockey League this season.

The rest was quiet because European leagues are off this week.

SUNDAY, NOV. 4

What you missed: Three games, including Dallas Stars at Washington Capitals. The Stars traded center Mike Ribeiro to the Capitals during the summer.

Real hockey: Stars prospect Brett Ritchie had a weekend to remember. After scoring four goals for the Niagara IceDogs on Saturday, he topped that with a five-goal game on Sunday. With 14 goals in 19 games, he's 10 goals short of his Ontario Hockey League career high, set last season in 53 games.

Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne had a 27-save shutout with Dinamo Minsk to push his Kontinental Hockey League record above .500 (7-6).

Phoenix Coyotes tough guy Paul Bissonnette scored for the Cardiff (Wales) Devils in the British league, giving him two goals in two games. That equals his NHL total from the past two seasons.

Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Tim Erixon, who arrived in the Rick Nash trade, had one goal, three assists and a plus-6 rating as the Springfield (Mass.) Falcons routed the Connecticut Whale 10-2 in the American Hockey League.

SATURDAY, NOV. 3

What you missed: 11 games, including St. Louis Blues at Los Angeles Kings. The Kings swept the Blues on their way to the Stanley Cup title.

Real hockey: Philadelphia Flyers winger Jakub Voracek was back in action with the Kontinental Hockey League's Lev Praha after missing about a month with a knee injury. He played more than 18 minutes and scored a goal.

Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid's point streak is over as the Owen Sound Attack shut down the 15-year-old. He had 20 points during the 15-game streak.

Taylor Hall makes his way onto the ice in his Oklahoma City Barons debut.

FRIDAY, NOV. 2

What you missed: Five games, including Boston Bruins at Washington Capitals. The Capitals ends the Bruins' Stanley Cup defense in the first round with a Game 7 overtime win.

Real hockey: Edmonton Oilers forward Taylor Hall had an eventful American Hockey League debut in his first game back from shoulder surgery. He scored 38 seconds into the game then was ejected in the third period for a hit to the head of the Houston Aeros' Jonas Brodin. Brodin suffered a broken collarbone on the play. The AHL took away Hall's match penalty because it ruled the hit was shoulder on shoulder.

Boston Bruins center Tyler Seguin scored four times as Biel routed Geneva-Servette in the Swiss league. Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane had three assists to give him five points in his two games with Biel.

Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec had a five-point game as Kladno beat Pardubice 9-6 in the Czech league.

THURSDAY, NOV. 1

What you missed: 10 games, including New Jersey Devils at Philadelphia Flyers. The Devils knocked off the Flyers during the second round of the playoffs on their way to the Stanley Cup Final.

Real hockey: Phoenix Coyotes tough guy Paul Bissonnette, the proud owner of 340,000-plus Twitter followers, is going to Wales. He signed with the Cardiff Devils, the team that got into a brawl in a recent game against Coventry in Britain's top league.

Florida Panthers forward Tomas Kopecky injured his shoulder and is returning to the USA for treatment. He had played four games with Dukla Trencin in his native Slovakia.

Buffalo Sabres forward Tyler Ennis scored his first Swiss league goal and added two assists in a loss for the SCL Tigers. He recently returned from an undisclosed injury.

The American Hockey League's Abbotsford Heat set a league record by scoring twice in three seconds, both short-handed. Steve McCarthy scored on a partial breakaway and when play resumed, Ben Street beat Toronto Marlies goalie Ben Scrivens with a shot from center ice. The previous AHL record for two fastest goals was five seconds. The NHL record is four. The ECHL had a three-second gap in a 1993 game.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 31

What you missed: One game, Pittsburgh Penguins at Washington Capitals. Since 2005, this has been Sidney Crosby vs. Alex Ovechkin, though Crosby's concussions and Ovechkin's decreased production have taken off some of the luster. Crosby is healthy again.

Real hockey: Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin had three assists to move to No. 2 on the KHL scoring list, two behind Alexander Radulov.

Portland Winterhawks defenseman Seth Jones, who's expected to challenge for the No. 1 spot in the draft, had a goal, an assist and a plus-3 rating in a 5-2 win against the Everett Silvertips.

TUESDAY, OCT. 30

What you missed: 11 games, including Dallas Stars at Philadelphia Flyers: After a successful NHL comeback with the Flyers last season, Jaromir Jagr signed with the Stars during the summer.

Real hockey: Chicago Blackhawks winger Patrick Kane scored a goal and an assist in his Swiss league debut with EHC Biel. EV Zug won the game, aided by Detroit Red Wings center Henrik Zetterberg's two-point game.

Philadelphia Flyers winger Wayne Simmonds scored twice for Liberec in the Czech Republic. It was first game after he was subjected to a racial chant in Chomutov.

Tampa Bay Lightning goalie Anders Lindback stopped 35 of 38 shots in a 3-2 overtime loss in his Finnish league debut.

What you missed: Two games, neither very compelling.

Real hockey: One NHL player and a future one won player of the week awards in the KHL. Real hockey: Columbus Blue Jackets winger Vinny Prospal made his debut with Mountfield in the Czech league, picking up an assist on Milan Michalek's goal.

Philadelphia Flyers player Brayden Schenn had a goal and three assists as the Adirondack Phantoms beat the Syracuse Crunch 4-3. Also in the American Hockey League, Carolina Hurricanes prospect Brett Sutter had a hat trick as the Charlotte Checkers routed the Peoria Rivermen 6-0.

Real hockey: This might sound like a broken record, but Montreal Canadiens/Vityaz Chekhov defenseman Andrei Markov left a game and didn't return. La Presse reported, however, that he said he was merely winded by a check and his departure had nothing to do with his surgically repaired knee.

Germany's Eispiraten Crimmitschau, which lost Wayne Simmonds and Chris Stewart to the Czech league, welcomed Toronto Maple Leafs forward Clarke MacArthur to the team.

Real hockey: Philadelphia Flyers signee Ruslan Fedotenko, one game after scoring a hat trick, tweaked his knee in a collision Thursday in the Kontinental Hockey League. His agent, Allan Walsh, said the Donbass Donetsk forward was day-to-day.

Minnesota Wild captain Mikko Koivu scored two goals in which his first game back with TPS Turku, a 5-3 loss to Ilves Tampere.

Real hockey: Fedotenko had a hat trick for Donbass Donetsk, including the overtime winner. All of his goals were set up by the Winnipeg Jets' Alexei Ponikarovsky. Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin also had three points for Metallurg Magnitogorsk in the game. Fedotenko had one goal heading into the game.

Nail Yakupov, who bolted the Ontario Hockey League for the Kontinental Hockey League, was named as one of the Russian team members who will play Canada next month in preparation for the world junior championships.

Real hockey: Lots of disciplinary news. Winnipeg Jets forward Evander Kane got a one-game suspension in the Kontinental Hockey League for a hit to the head. New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider got a game for a boarding incident in the American Hockey League. But Philadelphia Flyers tough guy Tom Sestito won't face supplementary discipline for his hit that injured Hull's Andy Ward. "The video clearly shows the point of contact is to the body and not to his head," said British elite league head of discipline Simon Kirkland. "It is therefore a legal hit and no further action will be taken and the checking-to-the-head penalty will be removed from Sestito's record."

John Davidson will be hired as Columbus Blue Jackets president of hockey operations, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

Real hockey: In a good sign for the Detroit Red Wings, Henrik Zetterberg had a hat trick for Switzerland's EV Zug. More important, Red Wings signee Damien Brunner set up two of the goals. Brunner leads the Swiss league with 22 points in 12 games. Also in Switzerland, Tyler Seguin outscored Boston Bruins teammate Patrice Bergeron three points to two, but Bergeron's Lugano beat Biel 6-3.

In the American Hockey League, Buffalo Sabres players Marcus Foligno and Cody Hodgson combined for seven points in a Rochester Americans win against the Hershey Bears. The game featured 15 goals (8-7), three fights and two ejections.

Erie Otters forward Connor McDavid, 15, extended his point streak to 11 games with a goal in an Ontario Hockey League loss to the Windsor Stars.

What you missed: Six games, including Edmonton Oilers at Anaheim Ducks. A matchup of young defensemen: Rookie Justin Schultz for the Oilers and Cam Fowler for the Ducks.

Real hockey: Speaking of Schultz, he had a monster game for the Oklahoma City Barons, where he's playing during the lockout. He had two short-handed goals, one into an empty net, one assist and a plus-5 rating in a 5-2 win against the San Antonio Rampage. Jordan Eberle (goal) and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (two assists) picked up their first points of the season.

Halifax Mooseheads center Nathan MacKinnon, expected to go into the top two in the draft, had a three-point night to give him 22 points in 12 games in the Quebec league.

Danny Briere had his third consecutive game of three or more points with Germany's Eisbaren Berlin. He has three goals and seven assists in three games.

The NCAA has reduced the penalty to Wisconsin freshman forward Nic Kardiles, an Anaheim Ducks prospect, to 30% of the season, or the first 10 games. He already has served two games after being accused of violating NCAA rules on amateurism.

Walter Dickey, Wisconsin's senior associate athletic director for regulatory affairs, said the school, while grateful that Kardiles won't have to sit out a season, was still dismayed that any penalty was imposed. "We remain confident that the facts demonstrate Nic had no culpability," he said, adding, "Nic is currently exploring his options which we have encouraged him to do. Our hope is that he remains a Badger."

Dallas Stars forward Jaromir Jagr left Kladno's game with an undisclosed injury. Meanwhile, St. Louis Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko came back from a suspected concussion and set up an Ilya Kovalchuk goal. He has 12 points in seven games.

Erie Otters center Connor McDavid, who's in the Ontario Hockey League at age 15 and has been praised by Sidney Crosby, scored a goal to give him a team-high 12 points in 10 games.

What you missed: Three games, including New York Rangers at New Jersey Devils, a rematch of the Eastern Conference final.

Real hockey: Edmonton forward Taylor Hall went to Oklahoma City to skate with the Oilers' affiliate while he continues to rehab his shoulder injury. Fellow Oilers Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are on the Barons. Hall would have to sign an American Hockey League contract in order to play there.

San Jose Sharks forward Joe Pavelski made his Kontinental Hockey League debut with Dinamo Minsk. The American had two shots and no points. Dinamo teammate Evander Kane got back into the lineup but remained without a point in five games this season.

TUESDAY, OCT. 16

What you missed: Nine games, including Phoenix Coyotes at Dallas Stars. Dallas free-agent signee Ray Whitney had played two seasons with the Coyotes.

Real hockey: Detroit Red Wings center Henrik Zetterberg made his EV Zug (Switzerland) debut, scoring a goal and an assist in an international game against Germany's Adler Mannheim. He was named second star.

Sibir Novosibirsk ended Dynamo Moscow's eight-game winning streak in the Kontinental Hockey League 3-2. Alex Ovechkin had an assist in the loss.

St. Louis Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko missed a second SKA St. Petersburg game because of a suspected concussion. Blues defenseman Kris Russell's knee injury has healed and he might return to TPS Turku in Finland.

MONDAY, OCT. 15

What you missed: Four games, including New York Rangers at San Jose Sharks, the second of a season-opening eight-game road trip for the Rangers because of renovations to Madison Square Garden.

Real hockey: A light night, except in the Kontinental Hockey League. Edmonton Oilers No. 1 overall pick Nail Yakupov scored again to give him five goals in five games for Neftekhimik Nizknekamsk since he returned from his suspension for playing without a transfer card. Evgeni Malkin had the game-winner for SKA St. Petersburg, plus an assist, to move back to being a point-a-game player.

Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 30 of 31 shots to pick up his first win in three tries with CSKA Moscow. That lowered his goals-against average to 3.01 and raised his save percentage to .897. He also had an epic spill while moving across his crease.

Carolina Hurricanes forward Alexander Semin's debut with Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod was delayed by the flu.

A couple Florida Panthers have agreed to go overseas. Tomas Kopecky will play for Dukla Trencin in Slovakia's top league. Mike Santorelli will join his brother Mark on Tingsryd in Sweden's second division.

And since we missed this the other night, Philadelphia's Tom Sestito had a Gordie Howe hat trick for the Sheffield Steelers on Sunday in the British league.

SUNDAY, OCT. 14

What you missed: One game, Dallas Stars at Anaheim Ducks.

Real hockey: Philadelphia Flyers teammates Danny Briere and Claude Giroux put up big points for the second game in a row. Briere had a hat trick and an assist in a 5-2 win against Grizzly Adams Wolfburg and Giroux had three assists. In their first two games for Germany's Eisbaren Berlin, they have combined for 13 points.

Washington Capitals goalie Michal Neuvirth (HC Sparta Praha) made 36 saves for his first win of the season, 3-2 vs. Pardubice. He's 1-7 with a 3.30 goals-against and .911 save percentage.

The Kamloops Blazers remained unbeaten in regulation (8-0-1) with a 5-2 win against the Calgary Hitmen. Undrafted Blazers right wing JC Lipon has his third four-point game of the month and leads the Western Hockey League with 22 points in nine games.

SATURDAY, OCT. 13

What you missed: 12 games, including banner-raising ceremonies in New Jersey (Eastern Conference), Phoenix (Pacific), Florida (Southeast) and Vancouver (Presidents' Trophy). Also, Zach Parise and Ryan Suter would have made their Minnesota Wild debuts against the Colorado Avalanche.

Real hockey: Ottawa Senators center Jason Spezza is definitely over his initial scoring drought with the Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in Switzerland. After going scoreless in his first four games, he has nine points over his last four games, including two four-point games. He set up four goals in a 6-5 win against EV Zug. Detroit Red Wings prospect Damien Brunner had two goals and two assists for Zug and Montreal Canadiens defenseman Raphael Diaz had three assists.

Avalanche center Matt Duchene and Chicago Blackhawks forward Viktor Stalberg made their Frolunda debuts, ending Modo's 11-game point streak 4-3. Stalberg had a goal and Duchene had two assists, including a sweet, spin-move, no-look pass to Fabian Brunnstrom for the winner.

St. Louis Blues prospect Vladimir Tarasenko (SKA St. Petersburg) is out at least a week with a concussion suffered Saturday, International Ice Hockey Federation spokesman Szymon Szemberg tweeted.

In the American Hockey League, highly pursued college defenseman Justin Schultz scored his first professional goal, the game-winner, as the Oklahoma City Barons beat the Lake Erie Monsters 3-2. Edmonton Oilers players Jordan Eberle and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins are scoreless in their first two games with the Barons. In a rematch of the Stanley Cup Final, affiliate-style, the Los Angeles Kings' Manchester (N.H.) Monarchs beat the Albany (N.J.) Devils 2-1.

In college hockey, Northeastern knocked off defending champion Boston College 3-1. Freshman Kevin Roy, an Anaheim Ducks prospect, has both of Northeastern's game-winning goals this season.

What you missed: Five games, including New York Rangers at Los Angeles Kings. The Kings would have raised a Stanley Cup banner for the first time in franchise history and Rick Nash would have made his Rangers debut.

Real hockey: Philadelphia Flyers teammates Claude Giroux and Danny Briere made their debuts with Germany's Eisbaren Berlin and had three points each in a 6-5 loss to Kolner Haie.

In college hockey, Penn State made its Division I debut. Freshman Casey Bailey scored Penn State's first goal, but the team lost 3-2 in overtime to American International. A $102 million donation by Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula helped establish the program in his alma mater.

The AHL got under way and the defending champion Norfolk (Va.) Admirals extended their regular-season winning streak to 29 games with a 4-2 win against the Worcester (Mass.) Sharks. The oddity: They did it with an almost entirely new team because the Tampa Bay Lightning switched their affiliation to the Syracuse (N.Y.) Crunch. The Anaheim Ducks now provide players to the Admirals. Troy Bodie broke a third-period tie.

THURSDAY, OCT. 11

What you missed: Four games, including St. Louis Blues at Colorado Avalanche. Colorado forward Gabriel Landeskog would have made his debut as the NHL's youngest captain.

Real hockey: Kladno's all-NHL line of Jaromir Jagr, Tomas Plekanec and Jiri Tlusty connected on a Tlusty goal in a 2-1 loss to Plzen in the Czech league. Though the line has slowed, it has combined for 38 points in nine games.
