Ortio earns 2nd career shutout, leads Flames past Oilers 5-0

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Todd McLellan was fired up, angry about what he had just seen from his listless Edmonton Oilers.

Joni Ortio made 28 saves for his second career shutout, Johnny Gaudreau and Mikael Backlund each scored two goals and the Calgary Flames snapped a two-game losing skid with a 5-0 victory over the Oilers on Saturday night.

The Oilers have lost three straight and five of their last six, and were shut out for the third time in their last eight home games.

"That's the exact (thing) we're trying to eradicate from this group," McLellan said. "You work hard, you try to get some foundation and you give it all back in one night. We were outshot, we were outhit, we were outscored, out-face offed, out-power played, out-penalty killed.

"Forget about the wins and the losses, it's just the effort. Because that's freaking embarrassing."

Joe Colborne also scored for the Flames. It was Ortio's first shutout of the season, and first since blanking Vancouver 1-0 on Jan. 10, 2015.

"I think our third period was one of the best we've played in a while, maybe all year," Ortio said. "When we had our chances to put them away, we did. That was a great effort."

The Flames played their final game against their Alberta rivals at Rexall Place in Edmonton, with the Oilers moving into a new downtown arena next season

"There have been some big rivalry games here," Backlund said. "They may not have been playoff games here, but still, we want to beat them every time no matter what's at stake, and it was a big win for us.

Josh Jooris sent a pass through the legs of a defender to Backlund, who beat Cam Talbot with a backhander to give Calgary a 1-0 lead with the short-handed goal.

The Flames appeared to add to their lead late in the first, but a power-play goal was called back on goaltender interference by Colborne.

Calgary made it 2-0 with five minutes to play, scoring shortly after Oilers rookie Connor McDavid rang a shot off the post behind Ortio, as Colborne deflected a Backlund pass into the net.

Gaudreau tucked in a rebound at the side of the net to give the Flames a three-goal lead early in the third.

Gaudreau scored his 30th of the season seven minutes into the third, deking Talbot on the power play to make it 4-0.

With eight minutes remaining, Backlund got away on a short-handed breakaway and scored just as time expired for an even-strength goal.

"We have to be better as a team," Oilers forward Taylor Hall said. "You want to play well in that final Battle of Alberta and have a good last home game at Rexall. We are going to have to be better next game."

NOTES: The Flames return home to face Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Oilers play their final home game Wednesday against Vancouver. ... It was the fifth and final meeting of the season between the teams, who split the previous four. ... The Oilers came in with an all-time regular-season record of 54-43-9-6 at home against Calgary. ... A pair of Oilers returned to the lineup: F Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and D Adam Pardy.
