New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist (30) is attended to by defenseman Dan Girardi (5) after suffering an apparent injury against the Pittsburgh Penguins during the first period in game one of the first round of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs at the CONSOL Energy Center.

PITTSBURGH -- Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinal between the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers has become the battle of the backup goalies.

Rangers starter Henrik Lundqvist was replaced by Antti Raanta after the first period because he was struck near the eye by teammate Marc Staal's stick near the end of the first period. Staal's stick blade pushed under Lundqvist's mask while Staal was battling with Pittsburgh forward Oskar Sundqvist in front of the net.

Lundqvist stayed in the game and then was scored upon by Patric Hornqvist shortly with 18 seconds left in the first period. Lundqvist didn't come back for the second period, and was not on the bench.

Pittsburgh's No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury also didn't start because it was deemed he was not ready. He has been out since March 31 with his second concussion of the season. Backup Jeff Zatkoff replaced him.
