The Pittsburgh Penguins' losing streak hit five games Wednesday night, but they finally got some good news with word that their leading scorer was avoiding a suspension.

Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin (71) yells at officials while leaving the ice after being ejected.

The Associated Press reported Thursday that center Evgeni Malkin wouldn't face a disciplinary hearing for his hit to the head of Washington Capitals winger T.J. Oshie.

Malkin received a match penalty, which triggered an automatic review, and was ejected during the third period of Wednesday's 2-1 loss in Washington.

Oshie was approaching Malkin, and the Penguins center straightened up, lifted his shoulder and caught Oshie in the head. Oshie, who had left the game earlier after being high-sticked in the eye, went to the dressing room to be checked out under the league's concussion protocol.

He returned and scored the winning goal with 1:14 left.

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan had said in his postgame news conference he wasn't concerned that Malkin could receive extra discipline.

The NHL Player Safety Department decided Malkin was bracing for a hit when he made contact and just let the major and game misconduct stand as his punishment, according to the Associated Press.

The news means the Penguins will have Malkin available when they try to end their slide Saturday at home against the improved Arizona Coyotes.

Malkin leads the team and ranks fourth in the league with 20 points.

The Penguins have been outscored 21-7 during their losing streak, though they played their best game of their slide on Wednesday, outshooting Washington 42-22.

They have struggled at home, going 2-4-1 and being outscored 32-18.
