NHL TRADE DEADLINE:The winners and losers

The most recent news and analysis will be listed at the top.

The Islanders acquired Jean-Gabriel Pageau from the Senators and signed him to a six-year, $30 million deal.

8:15 p.m. Bizarre twist

The Golden Knights landed goalie Robin Lehner, but not much of his cap hit. The Blackhawks retained part of his salary, as happens. But the Golden Knights also traded part of his cap hit to the Maple Leafs. In exchange for Toronto's accommodation, Vegas sent the Leafs a fifth-round pick and acquired the rights to Martins Dzierkals.

Confused? Capfriendly.com explains it best.

4:41 p.m. Lightning are all in

While a first-round pick seems steep for a depth player whose 24 points represents a career high, Goodrow does have a year left at a $925,000 cap hit.

4:15 p.m. Another Golden Knights move

In addition to landing goalie Robin Lehner, Vegas acquires Nick Cousins from the Canadiens for a 2021 fourth-round pick to add depth. Meanwhile, Malcolm Subban is part of the package heading back to Chicago in the Lehner deal. He's a restricted free agent. Lehner and Corey Crawford are unrestricted.

3:15 p.m. Hurricanes trade for Skjei

Brady Skjei has four more years at a $5.25 million cap hit left on his contract. The Hurricanes' defense remains a strength, and it will be downright scary once Dougie Hamilton and Brett Pesce return. The Rangers, meanwhile, free up some cap space for the upcoming offseason, while giving others (perhaps younger players) chances on the blue line.

3:00 p.m. Vegas adds Lehner

Robin Lehner has a 3.01 goals-against average and .918 save percentage. He should be seen as a 1B to Marc-Andre Fleury, who has a .906 save percentage. Vegas ranked 23rd in team save percentage. This provides Vegas with a huge backup upgrade.

2:56 p.m. Hurricanes nab a defenseman

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the cost is a pick and a prospect. Carolina is down two key defensemen in Dougie Hamilton and Brett Pesce, so this add was a must. Vatanen has 23 points in 47 games. He will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

2:30 p.m. Penguins stay busy

Conor Sheary is a familiar face in Pittsburgh. He played on the Penguins' back-to-back Stanley Cup teams.

2:12 p.m. Oilers add speed

Edmonton gets Andreas Athanasiou, who goes from the last-place Red Wings to an expected spot on Connor McDavid's wing. He has the speed to be a good fit there.

2:08 p.m. Flames add defensemen

According to reports, they land the Blackhawks' Erik Gustafsson and Kings' Derek Forbort. The Flames need defensive depth with Mark Giordano out with a hamstring injury.

1:55 p.m. Pageau extension

The Islanders gave up three draft picks to land Jean-Gabriel Pageau from the Senators, but now they have him long term. The deal is reasonable for the versatile player.

1:35 p.m. Rangers, Hurricanes trade brewing?

Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce is out with an upper-body injury, so their interest in a defenseman makes sense. The Rangers, all of a sudden, have a plethora of young defensemen in the system and also need to make their contracts work to fit under the cap next season, especially after extending Chris Kreider.

1:13 p.m. Thornton bidding heating up

12:55 p.m. Parise, Lamoriello reuniting?

According to reports, Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello is working to trade for Minnesota's Zach Parise. Lamoriello drafted Parise in 2003 when he was GM of the Devils. For now, enjoy this tweet ...

12:40 p.m. Ducks, Bruins have a deal

According to reports, the Ducks have traded forward Nick Ritchie to the Bruins for forward Danton Heinen. Heinen (22 points) has a year left at $2.8 million, while Ritchie (19 points) has another year left on his deal at $1.5 million.

12:00 p.m. Simmonds gets traded

Not too sure what Buffalo is doing with this one. The Sabres are six points out of a playoff position in the Atlantic Division and eight points out of the final wild-card spot. Simmonds has eight goals and 24 points this season, and he is a tough body who provides a net-front presence.

11:24 a.m. Kreider is off the board

Chris Kreider signs for $6.5 million a year, according to reports, taking off the top potential player from the board. Kreider, 28, has 24 goals and 45 points this season.

11:13 a.m. Penguins trade for Marleau

GM Jim Rutherford is the master of the trade. Patrick Marleau adds speed and experience to a group readying for a deep playoff run. Nice fit.

10:30 a.m. Trocheck to Carolina

That didn't take long. Vincent Trocheck is a perfect fit for the analytically-driven Hurricanes. He's a strong offensive center who is two years removed from a 31-goal, 75-point campaign. He still has two years left on his deal, and at 26, is still in his prime. Lucas Wallmark, 24, is a center who has 23 points this year. Erik Haula, 28, has 22 points in 41 games. Eetu Luostarinen, 21, is a forward in the AHL, while Chase Priskie, 23, is a defenseman in the minors.

10:01 a.m. Islanders add Pageau

The Islanders paid a hefty price to trade for Jean-Gabriel Pageau, a center who will add some much-needed scoring punch to a team that is ranked 22nd in offense. He has 24 goals and 40 points this year ... but he's also shooting 17.8%, almost double his career high. For this price, the Islanders could hope to have an inside track at an extension.

9:45 a.m. We have a trade

Vladislav Namestnikov will provide Colorado with secondary offense. He has 13 goals and 25 points in 56 games this season; 54 of these games were spent with the Senators, who rank 26th in offense.

9:40 a.m. Trocheck available?

Vincent Trocheck hasn't repeated his 31-goal campaign from two years ago, but he remains an effective scoring-line center. He's also signed for two more years at $4.75 million a year. The cost could be steep.

9:32 a.m. Red Wings aren't done

The Red Wings traded Mike Green to the Oilers last night, but they might not be done. Andreas Athanasiou (pending restricted free agent) is among the fastest players in the NHL. Even though he only has 10 goals and 24 points this season in 46 games, he notched 30 last year. Luke Glendening could fit on a contender in a fourth-line role.

9:30 a.m. Sharks veterans could move

The Penguins would be a good fit for either Joe Thornton or Patrick Marleau ... but so would any other contender in need of experience. Thornton could fit in well as a third-line center, while Marleau still brings speed in more of a depth role.

9:24 a.m. Teams to watch

1 - Rangers. Chris Kreider is the best player among those rumored to be available. But will the Rangers trade him or re-sign him? He will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Could New York keep him without agreeing to an extension? The Rangers have been surging over the past two months or so, but forward Jesper Fast (pending UFA), defenseman Tony DeAngelo (pending RFA) and goalie Alexander Georgiev (pending RFA) could be in play.

2 - Avalanche. The Avalanche are an injured bunch with goalie Philipp Grubauer (indefinitely) and forwards Mikko Rantanen, Nazem Kadri and Matt Calvert out for at least the next few weeks. Second in the Central Division, will GM Joe Sakic make moves to patch these holes? One would think goalie is a must.

3 - Leafs. The inconsistent Leafs have dropped to third in the Atlantic Division. Defenseman Tyson Barrie is fifth on TSN's trade bait board. It's hard to envision GM Kyle Dubas selling off Barrie without getting impact value now.

4 - Hurricanes. This team reached the conference finals last season, but it will be without goalies James Reimer and Petr Mrazek for at least the foreseeable future. Defenseman Brett Pesce will also be out a while with an upper-body injury. GM Don Waddell has enough attractive assets to pull off a significant move.

5 - Coyotes. The Coyotes signaled they were all when they acquired Taylor Hall earlier this season, but they have fallen to the first wild-card spot, with a 4-5-1 record over the last 10 games. As The Athletic notes, the Coyotes could use a center and a right-handed defenseman. The Coyotes are about $3.5 million under the salary cap.
