Rangers' Alexandar Georgiev on altercation with Tony DeAngelo: 'I just want to keep it in the past'

In his first Zoom session since his now-infamous altercation with Tony DeAngelo, Alexandar Georgiev expressed his desire to move on and turn his attention to hockey.

"I don’t want to elaborate on what happened," he said. "I just want to keep it in the past tense. Emotions happened, and that’s all I can say. I wish Tony the best moving forward and I’m going to focus on my game."

Tuesday marked 10 days since the much-talked-about postgame squabble between the goalie and now-waived defenseman — an extended stretch in which Georgiev has made zero on-ice appearances.

That drought will end Wednesday when his New York Rangers host the Boston Bruins, with coach David Quinn confirming Georgiev as his starter.

"He's in a good spot and he's looked good in practice," Quinn said Tuesday from the MSG Training Center in Tarrytown. "It's important for him to get in the net for a variety of reasons. We're going to need him, one, and two, he wants to play. I think it will help continue to move forward here, but I think he's pretty much moved forward anyway."

Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby scores the game-winning goal in overtime against Alexandar Georgiev and former Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo.

It was a slight surprise not see Georgiev start Monday against the Islanders, an opponent he has more wins against than any other to go along with a gaudy .941 save percentage.

Instead, Quinn stuck with Igor Shesterkin for the third straight game, hoping to continue a modest winning streak.

It didn't work out, as the Rangers lost 2-0. But regardless of Monday's outcome, Quinn said the plan was to go to Georgiev on Wednesday.

Moving forward, despite previous talk of alternating starts, expect the hotter goalie to play more often.

"It’s all based on how they play right now," Quinn said. "Obviously, with what happened in the last 10 days and Shesty kind of playing well, it kind of did alter the plan a little bit. We'll see how it goes game-to-game right now. As I said, when we decided to (alternate), I didn't know how long it was going to happen. I didn’t anticipate it to be only for two games, but some things happen unexpectedly, and you can kind of adapt to it."

Monday began a stretch of eight games in 14 days for the Rangers (4-5-2), so expect both goalies to see action during that two-week span.

Shesterkin (3-3-1, .916 SV%, 2.31 GAA) has outperformed Georgiev (1-2-1, .886 SV%, 3.27 GAA) to this point, but perhaps getting back in after a week-plus of seeing his name in the news for non-hockey reasons will be a welcomed dose of normalcy.

"I didn’t follow the rumors really that much," Georgiev said. "What happened unfortunately happened in the heat of the moment. I moved past it pretty quickly, and basically it's been just working hard in practice, waiting for the next chance to play. Business as usual."
