Atalanta fans banned from away games for 3 months

AP

ROME (AP) β€” Fans of Serie A club Atalanta have been banned from traveling to away matches for three months in the first application of a new government anti-violence law for stadiums.

The punishment was decided after police had to intervene both during and following a 2-1 loss at home to Roma last weekend.

Fans attacked police with small homemade bombs containing nails and other metal bits, which resulted in injuries to six police officers and damage to three police vehicles.

The law was put in place in August, and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano signed off on the punishment.
