America to face Tigres in Mexican league final

MEXICO CITY (AP) — America and Tigres will compete in the final of Mexico's first division, after both advanced from the semifinals of the championship this weekend.

America drew 0-0 with Monterrey on Sunday to win 3-0 on aggregate over the two legs, while Tigres drew 0-0 with Toluca to progress as the higher seed.

Like many Latin American countries, Mexico divides its season into two parts. These playoffs are for the so-called Apertura (Opening) title.

The schedule for the final will be confirmed on Monday, but the first leg is set to be played on Thursday, with the defining match next Sunday.

America successfully maintained its three-goal advantage against Monterrey in the second leg. Luis Mendoza scored in both halves of the first leg, with Monterrey's Efrain Velarde netting an own goal.

Tigres finished the regular season in second position, and advanced to the semifinals as the higher seed, despite both games against Toluca ending as goalless draws. Toluca had more possession and shots on target in the first leg, but Tigres dominated possession and defended for the draw on Sunday.

America has won 11 league titles, the same number as its rival Guadalajara Chivas. If America wins this season, it will become the most successful team in the history of Mexican football.
