City beats Victory in Melbourne derby in A-League

SYDNEY (AP) β€” Melbourne City beat the Melbourne Victory 1-0 in a local derby and helped the Perth Glory increase their first-place lead to six points in the A-League.

Midfielder Erik Paartalu's goal from a header on a cross from Mate Dugandzic in the final minute Saturday moved City into the Australian league's top six.

The second-place Victory, meanwhile, saw the gap between them and the Glory widen. Chris Harold scored twice and Danny De Silva added an insurance goal with a 25-yard strike to give Perth a 4-1 home win over the Central Coast Mariners.

With the Glory leading 2-1, De Silva latched onto Harold's lob pass, tapped the ball up for himself while backing into a defender and smashed a volley into the net.

Harold and Ireland striker Andy Keogh gave Perth a 2-0 first-half lead before Matt Simon scored four minutes into the second half to pull Central Coast to within one. But De Silva's goal and Harold's second in the 78th gave the Glory their ninth win and a draw in 11 matches.

On Friday, Argentine striker Jeronimo Neumann's 81st-minute goal gave the Newcastle Jets a 2-1 win over third-place Adelaide United for their first win of the season. Scott Neville had given the Jets the lead four minutes into the second half, but Craig Goodwin equalized for Adelaide with 20 minutes remaining.

The Jets also have four draws in 11 matches.

"They were magnificent and everyone involved with the club deserves it," Newcastle coach Phil Stubbins said. "People have doubted us but this is a really nice feeling."

Fourth-place Sydney FC hosts fifth-place Wellington on Sunday to conclude the 11th round.

The Asian Champions League winners Western Sydney Wanderers, returning from Morocco after a sixth-place finish at the Club World Cup, had a weekend bye, as did the Brisbane Roar.
