HULL, England (AP) β€” Hull edged toward Premier League safety after overcoming an early deficit to beat Southampton 2-1 on Sunday.

Charlie Austin got the visitors off to a flying start when he scored from the penalty spot in the sixth minute to give Southampton the early lead. But despite conceding a significant edge in possession, the home side roared back with two goals in as many second-half minutes from Robert Snodgrass and Michael Dawson in the 61st and 63rd, respectively.

The defeat was midtable Southampton's second league setback in a row following on from a 2-0 loss to Chelsea a week ago.

Hull City, which came into the game on the back of six consecutive league losses, remains in the relegation zone on goal difference with 10 points from 11 matches.
