Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez, Carlos Vela headline 2021 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge

The joint all-star game between Major League Soccer and Mexico's Liga MX got its first healthy dose of star power.

Former Mexican national team stars Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez (of the Los Angeles Galaxy) and Carlos Vela (of Los Angeles FC) have committed to participate in the 2021 MLS All-Star Skills Challenge on Aug. 24 at Los Angeles' Banc of California Stadium (airing on FS1 and TUDN).

Chicharito and Vela will be joined by six other MLS players to take on eight of Liga MX's finest in a talent exhibition that features five different events: The shooting challenge, touch challenge, cross and volley challenge, passing challenge, and the crossbar challenge. The Liga MX squad, as well as the rest of the MLS team, will be announced at a later date.

After his brace in the Galaxy's 3-1 win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, Chicharito is the MLS leader in goals scored with 10 throu10 games played. That effort earned him MLS Player of the Week honors for the third time this season. Vela was the league's MVP in 2019 when he set the MLS single-season goal-scoring record with 34. Chicharito and Vela have appeared in 30 matches together for the Mexican national team between 2010 and 2018.

The MLS-Liga MX all-star game will take place on Aug. 25 (airing on FS1 and Univision) and also will be held at Banc of California Stadium. It is the third dual-national competition between the two leagues, joining the Leagues Cup and Campeones Cup. Orlando City won the previous skills challenge held in 2019.
