Game of Thrones: Who will win the Iron Throne?

Ryan R. Bonini
Sportsbook Wire

Winter is here. It's tough saying that enthusiastically when it resumed snowing here in Michigan. In April. I digress.

Game of Thrones Season 8 is here Sunday. The Final Season. The Battle for the Iron Throne. Dragons. White Walkers. Ravens. Starks. Lannisters. Targaryens. Dragon Glass. Lots of wine and witty banter. Remove everything but the wine and witty banter, and you have my place on a fun Saturday night.

The battle for the Seven Kingdoms is finally here and will have it all, and I couldn't be more excited (unless if it stopped snowing, that is).

Its time to find out who will sit on the Iron Throne once and for all.

Or will we?

It wouldn't be the first time Game of Thrones writers led us down one path to completely blow our minds later.

WARNING: Before you go any further, please note there may be SPOILERS, including theories and speculation.

Note: I said spoilers. You have been warned.

Oddsmakers are not in the business to lose money, so taking their odds into account is important when considering who will be the winner (possibly just still standing?) at the end of Game of Thrones.

Winning the Game of Thrones Odds and Betting Action

Surprised to see Daenerys Targaryen's 10/1 odds twice that of Jon Snow; but being part Stark and Targaryen, Snow fits the Fire and Ice theory. He seems like too obvious, though, and has already died once. The payout is weak, but both are worth an investment as they might be the final team standing.

The betting world thinks Bran Stark, a.k.a. the One-eyed Raven (and the Night King?), is going to sit atop the Iron Throne. Is he even Bran Stark anymore? I get confused. Either way, this feels too easy; there are plenty of theories that Bran and the Night King (10/1) are one in the same, too. Would a sportsbook pay on both? I don't think it'll come to that and wouldn't put any money here… again, it just feels too easy and that isn't GoT style.

Petyr "Little Finger" Baelish is interesting (and annoying). We saw him die at the hands of the Starks. Or did we? What do the sportsbooks know that we don't? At 8/1 odds, they think he has a pretty good chance of weaseling his way to the Iron Throne. For the love of all that is good in Westeros, please let it be any other ending than this. It would be the least satisfying ending the show could come up with. Gut says this is a bad bet… BUT it would be an epic, evil Game of Thrones twist and, if GoT writers have taught us anything, it's rare that the hero/fan favorite gets off easy or wins.

Cersei Lannister always gets what she wants, but it feels like she needs to die an epic death during the final as some level of karma for everything she has brought to many other characters over the years. Strangely enough, seeing her sitting on the Throne at the end ruling over absolutely nothing feels fitting. 16/1 odds is worth a small investment.

If you like casting a wide net when betting, I'd throw some bones on Sansa (4/1) and Arya (12/1) Stark, too. They've been through hell. Sansa is cold, calculated and has her eye on the prize. Arya can wear other people's faces. Either could be there at the end. They could also kill each other…

Speaking of casting a wide net, throw some green on Samwell Tarley's 25/1 odds. He comes from a noble family, is educated and could make a good place holder while they usher in the new world. He's the biggest underdog with reasonable odds.

Gendry, believed to be the bastard son of deceased King Robert Baratheon (and possibly Cersei's son, too), has climbed the charts. I'm shocked he's 7-1, The Action Network notes he was 75-1 last summer. I expect he dies in the final battle; it is kind of tough to make a war hammer out of dragon glass after all. Stay away from this one.

Love Hodor's 100-to-1 payout, but it's a sucker bet. I could get behind seeing him on the throne, smirking that Hodor smirk, and simply repeating " Hodor. Hodor. Hodor." as the screen goes black. Hey, it's better than Little Finger winning.

I'm shocked to not see " The Field" as an option. Some unknown character - or under-utilized - could easily have an arc in the final episodes and come out on top.

Don't waste money on the Greyjoys. Although I could see them surviving through an escape by sea.

Who do you think will win the Iron Throne? Will anyone be left standing? Let me hear it in the comments below or tweet me @RyanBonini.
