Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins - NHL Best Bet of the Day

Joe Williams
Sportsbook Wire

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Bruins square off in the postseason for the third time in the past seven seasons. The B's eliminated the Leafs in excruciating fashion in Game 7 back in 2013, and they won again in a decisive seventh game last season. The Leafs haven't been out of the first round since losing in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Philadelphia Flyers in 2004.

The Bruins have a ton of firepower up front, and it will be interesting to see how they handle their goaltender situation. Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak were mostly on a rotational basis for a good chunk of the season, and we'll see if that continues into the playoffs. Generally, that hasn't been a recipe for success.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins: By the Numbers

  • The Leafs have dropped six of the past seven meetings in Boston, while the 'over' is 4-0-2 in the past six played at TD Garden.

  • The Bruins ranked third in the NHL with a 25.9 percent conversion rate on the power play, while the Leafs were eighth at 21.8 percent.
  • Both teams managed a 79.9 percent mark on the penalty kill this season, middle of the road in the NHL.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins: Projected Goalie Starters

Frederik Andersen vs. Tuukka Rask

Andersen struggled in last season's playoffs against Boston, managing a dismal 3.76 GAA and .896 save percentage, and he wasn't much better against the B's during the regular season. He was 1-1 with a 4.52 GAA with an .882 save percentage across two starts vs. Boston this season.

Rask enjoyed a little home cooking, posting a 15-6-2 record, 2.32 GAA and .913 save percentage across 23 starts and one relief appearance. He faced the Leafs just once, yielding two goals on 32 shots in a victory back on Jan. 12. Halak was just as hard on Toronto, going 2-1-0 with a 2.36 GAA ad .932 save percentage in three starts during the regular season.

Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins: NHL Best Bet

Moneyline: Underdogs won three of five Game 1s Wednesday in the first shots fired in this season's playoffs. However, Vegas isn't feeling a Leafs' upset ( +125), with the B's ( -150) moderate favorites in their own barn. Based on the history between these two sides, a sizable bet on Boston is warranted.

Against the spread: The way Andersen handled himself against Boston in the playoffs, and the regular season, the puck line is awfully attractive at ( -1.5, +170). The Maple Leafs aren't worth playing at ( +1.5, -200). It's just too expensive, and too risky, with the possibility of a blowout looming.

Over/under: The Over (6) is mighty attractive given the history of these sides, with the over going 3-1-1 in the past five meetings overall between these Original Six rivals. Boston and the over makes for an attractive parlay, too.
