Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees: Projected Starting Pitchers

RHP Lucas Giolito vs. LHP J.A. Happ

Giolito has shown both his best and his worst through his first two starts of the season. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning in his season debut against the Kansas City Royal before giving up two earned runs and being pulled after 6 2/3. His worst was over 4 1/3 innings against the Seattle Mariners when he allowed five earned runs and walked four with four strikeouts.

The Yankees haven't officially announced a starter as of Friday morning, but signs point toward Happ. The 36-year-old has had two shaky starts thus far, having allowed six earned runs over 8 1/3 innings in two starts against the lowly Baltimore Orioles. The veteran's allowed a career-high fly ball rate to start the year but has luckily been hit for hard contact on just 23.1 percent of batted balls.

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees: By the Numbers

  • Happ's been throwing far fewer sinkers (his former No. 2 pitch) and more fastballs and sliders.
  • The Yankees, 5-7, have a run differential of plus-12. The White Sox have lost five straight and have a minus-27 run differential that's tied for fourth-worst in the majors.

  • White Sox SS Tim Anderson ranks fifth in the league with an OPS of 1.256 through 38 plate appearances. He's slashing .514/.526/.730 with two home runs.
  • Chicago's bullpen has the seventh-worst ERA at 5.91 and its 4.85 walks allowed per nine innings is the eighth-worst rate.

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees: Key Injuries

The Yankees injury report continues to grow by the day. C Gary Sanchez told reporters Wednesday he was dealing with leg tightness but was able to appear in the game as a pinch-hitter. Thursday's team off-day may have allowed him to get back to proper health.

Moneyline: White Sox hitters have fared worse this year against lefties than righties. While Happ hasn't looked like his typical self yet this season the Yankees are the play at -220.

Against the spread: It's paying +100 for the White Sox to cover +1.5 runs. It's good insurance in the event of another struggle for Happ.

Over/under: Take the OVER on 9.5 at -110 with both starters prone to a poor outing and the bullpens struggling.
