Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders: By the Numbers

Dennis Schneidler-USA TODAY Sports

  • The Islanders were -110 favorites in Game 1 and held on for the overtime victory while going over the 5.5 total.
  • Pittsburgh fired 11 more shots on goal than New York, with nine players each accounting for three or more.
  • Each team was able to make the other pay for a lack of discipline, with either side notching one power-play goal in Game 1.

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders: Projected Goalie Starters

Matt Murray vs. Robin Lehner

It was a subpar outing for Murray in the opener, especially given what we've come to expect from him in the postseason. He stopped 29 of 33 shots on goal, giving up the winner less than five minutes into the first overtime session.

Lehner was as dominant as he was all regular season, making 41 saves on 44 shots. He allowed just over two goals per game at home and ranked third in the league in Hockey Reference's Goals Saved Above Average.

Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Islanders: NHL Best Bet

Moneyline: The Penguins are massive -130 favorites on the road for Game 2. The younger Islanders were up to the task of playoff hockey in the series opener and should be over any jitters if they ever existed. Getting a home team in the playoffs at +110 feels like a steal, even if there are fewer than 14,000 fans in attendance.

Against the spread: The much safer - but less rewarding - play is the Islanders to cover +1.5 at -250 odds.

Over/under: The total remains just 5.5 despite Game 1's seven goals. Take the OVER at a higher payout of +100.
