Pittsburgh Pirates at Detroit Tigers: Projected Starting Pitchers

RHP Joe Musgrove vs. LHP Matthew Boyd

Musgrove has made three appearances, including two starts, and he has allowed just two unearned runs with seven hits, three walks and 15 strikeouts across 15 1/3 innings, and he has lasted at least 6 1/3 innings in each of his two starts. The Pirates will be looking to end an 0-6 skid in Musgrove's past six road starts, and an 0-4 losing streak with him on the mound against winning teams.

Boyd enters play 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and he, too, has quality starts over his past two outings. The Tigers have won 12 of the past 14 starts with Boyd on the bump at home, they're 4-0 in his past four against winning teams and 4-1 in their past five against winning teams with the southpaw starting.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Detroit Tigers: By the Numbers

  • The Tigers rank dead-last in the majors with just seven home runs through 15 games, and just three homers in six game in their home park.
  • Pittsburgh OF Melky Cabrera is hitting a robust .390 (16-for-41) with three doubles, a home run and four RBI with a .942 OPS.
  • The Pirates have the third-fewest strikeouts as an offense (120) through 14 outings.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Detroit Tigers: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: The Pirates ( -110) have been a little more consistent on offense, as the Tigers (+ 104) have several regulars hitting at or below the Mendoza line. Take the Bucs, who are 7-3 in their past 10 interleague road outings. Detroit is just 1-4 in their past five against right-handed starting pitchers, and 13-38 in the past 51 against winning teams.

Against the spread: If you are a regular reader, you know I am not a big fan of run lines. However, Pittsburgh ( -1.5, +144) is a decent play in this one against the moribund offense of Detroit. The Tigers ( +1.5, -168) are not worth using.

Over/under: The UNDER has cashed in three straight starts by Boyd, and 11 of the past 15 games for the Tigers. The under is also 4-1 in the past five road contests for the Pirates, and 5-2 in their past seven against winning teams. UNDER 7.5(-106) is the play.
