Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes: By the Numbers

  • The Hurricanes surged back into the Round 1 series Monday, winning their first home playoff game since 2008-09 by a score of 5-0 over the Caps. It marked former Detroit Red Wings G Petr Mrazek's first playoff win since 2015-16.
  • Washington had previously scored four goals in each of the first two games but was limited to just 18 shots on goal in Game 3.
  • Capitals C Nicklas Backstrom leads the series in scoring with three goals and one assist. Hurricanes Ds Dougie Hamilton and Jaccob Slavin, and LW Warren Foegele also have four points.
  • Capitals G Braden Holtby also allowed five goals in a Game 1 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights in last year's Stanley Cup Final before stopping 114 of 122 shots in four straight wins for the cup.

Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes: Projected Goalie Starters

Braden Holtby vs. Petr Mrazek

Game 3 dropped Holtby's save percentage to .902 this postseason. He's played 85 career playoff games and owns an overall mark of .928. He posted a .922 SV% and 2.16 goals against average en route to the cup last season.

Mrazek appeared in 40 games and posted a .914 save percentage over the regular season. That number has fallen to .897 - including the shutout - through three games against the Capitals. His career mark is .921 through 14 appearances.

Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes: Key Injuries

Hurricanes rookie LW Andrei Svechnikov is in the concussion protocol following his Game 3 fight with Alex Ovechkin. He isn't expected to play.

LW Michael Ferland is expected to miss the pivotal game after leaving Monday's contest due to an upper-body injury.

Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes: NHL Best Bet

Moneyline: The Capitals are +105 underdogs for Game 4. The Hurricanes' impressive Game 3 win came with a serious cost with the expected losses of Ferland and Svechnikov and the cup champs should take full advantage to set up a series win on home ice.

Against the spread: The outright win for Washington is a better bet than the -251 odds for them to cover +1.5.

Over/under: Games 1-3 went 1-1-1 against Thursday's total of 6. Take the under at -105 while the Hurricanes lack some key pieces up front.
