Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays: Projected Starting Pitchers

RHP Rick Porcello vs. RHP Charlie Morton

Porcello has allowed 14 earned runs, 22 hits, three homers, and 12 walks through 11 1/3 innings and three appearances this year. He's struck out 10 and is allowing fewer flyballs and less hard contact but opposing hitters have been pulling the ball more against him. His average velocities on all pitches are the same as they've been in recent years, though he's been relying more on his fastball and changeup and not so much on his breaking balls.

Morton has pitched to a 2.18 ERA through 20 2/3 innings. His last start - and fourth of the year - was the first in which he didn't make it at least five innings. He allowed just one run but gave up four hits and three walks with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 frames against the Toronto Blue Jays. He's giving up more flyballs but has decreased his rate of hard contact while allowing just one home run.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays: By the Numbers

  • Friday's game snapped a streak of four straight UNDERs for the Red Sox and was the Rays' third consecutive game playing to the OVER.
  • Tampa Bay had won the previous four head-to-head matchups with Boston, including three straight wins at home over the 2018 World Series champions.

  • Rays OF Austin Meadows ranks 13th in all of baseball with an OPS of 1.120 against right-handed pitching. The Rays rank sixth as a team while Boston is just 21st.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays: Key Injuries

Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia went on the injured list Thursday with a knee injury but expects to be activated when first eligible. 2B Eduardo Nunez and INF Brock Holt are also on the injured list.

Rays 2B Joey Wendle deemed himself ready to return Friday following a rehab game. C Mike Zunino is on the paternity list for one to two more games.

Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay Rays: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: There aren't any serious issues in Porcello's underlying statistics, making it seem as though he'll eventually be able to rebound from his awful start. Boston's a +122 underdog on the road following Friday's win and while we'd like that number to be a little larger, we can still take as the Red Sox goes for a 2-0 series lead.

Against the spread: There's no value in Boston's -174 to cover the +1.5 spread so opt for the outright victory instead.

Over/under: Take the UNDER for Saturday's total of 8 at more appealing -102 odds.
