NHL Playoffs - Updated Stanley Cup Champion Odds

Clearly the NHL regular season taught us nothing. An 82-game season generally gives you a pretty good idea of who a team is.

Not this year.

The Calgary Flames, who were 50-25-7 in the regular season, were bumped from the playoffs last night when the Colorado Avalanche beat them 4-1 in the series. The NHL playoffs now are without the best two teams from the NHL regular season. The Tampa Bay Lightning, of course, were already bumped when they were swept in the first-round. That came after a 62-16-4 record in the regular season.

With the Toronto Maple Leafs taking a 3-2 series lead over the Boston Bruins (49-24-9) last night, the third-best team is on the verge of elimination, too! They say things come in threes…

Stanley Cup Champion odds have changes significantly as a result, at least for some teams.

Stanley Cup NHL Betting Thoughts

  • The Vegas Golden Knights ( +650) are the best investment of the group. They're one-win away from advancing into the next round, as they lead the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in their first-round playoff series.
  • I'm also not writing off the Washington Capitals ( +750), despite being in a 2-2 series tie with the Carolina Hurricanes. Washington started slow a year ago, too, before turning on the jets.
  • And for a hattrick in wagers, sprinkle some cash on New York Islanders ( +550). I'm not a huge believer, but their defensive style and sound goaltending is what gets it done in the NHL postseason. They shut down the high-scoring options for the Pittsburgh Penguins, so no other offense sans maybe Vegas will be intimidating to them.
