Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox: Projected Starting Pitchers

LHP Matthew Boyd vs. LHP Chris Sale

Boyd's enjoying a breakout year through four starts. He has just a 2.96 ERA and shares the league lead in strikeouts at 36 while walking just 2.59 batters per nine innings. He's gotten a little lucky with just one home run allowed but he's managed to decrease both his rates of flyballs and hard contact.

Sale's allowed at least four earned runs in three of four starts this year and has gone six innings just once. He's given up five homers and has issued five walks against 14 strikeouts. He's managed to strand just 56.5 percent of base runners.

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox: By the Numbers

  • The Red Sox ranks 15th in team OPS against left-handed pitching with the Tigers buried at the bottom of the league with a mark of just .568 and only one home run against a lefty pitcher.
  • Detroit's bullpen ranks fourth in cumulative ERA at 3.29. Boston's relievers have the 12th-worst group ERA at 4.78.
  • Red Sox OF J.D. Martinez continues to lead baseball with a personal OPS of 1.914 against lefties through 22 plate appearances.

  • Monday will be the Red Sox's seventh home game of the season. It's 3-3 straight up thus far but 2-4 against the spread. Boston's 12-9-1 against the total overall.
  • The Tigers are just 1-8 against totals as visitors this year but have won six of 11 road games and covered the spread just as many times.

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox: Key Injuries

Tigers SS Jordy Mercer will be eligible to return from the injured list Tuesday and said he's likely to do so shortly after. OF Christin Stewart is likely to be out until later this month.

Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: The Tigers are +182 underdogs on the road despite having the better starter and superior bullpen. The Detroit lineup has been almost completely powerless against lefty pitching and could be just what the doctor ordered to get Sale back on track, but the Tigers are worth backing at a lofty number.

Against the spread: If picking the Tigers for the outright win seems a little bold to you, take them instead to cover +1.5 at -112 odds.

Over/under: If the Tigers win, it'll be on the back of Boyd in a low-scoring game. Take the UNDER on the total of 8 at -106.
