New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels: Projected Starting Pitchers

RHP Masahiro Tanaka vs. RHP Trevor Cahill

The Yanks trot out their Opening Day starter Tanaka, as he looks to improve upon his 2-1 record and 2.76 ERA across 29 1/3 innings over five starts. He had his most impressive outing of the season last time out, allowing just one earned run and four hits over seven innings in a win against Kansas City on April 20, and he won his only road outing of the season on April 8 in Houston, yielding one earned run, three hits and two walks over six frames.

The Halos counter with their OD starter, but Cahill hasn't had nearly the same success as his counterpart. He is 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA in five outings, and he has coughed up nine earned runs in 8 1/3 innings over his past two assignments.

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels: By the Numbers

  • The Yankees are 6-2 over Tanaka's past eight starts against AL West opponents, and 36-16 in his past 52 starts against teams with a losing record. In addition, the Yankees have won six straight starts by Tanaka against the Angels, and they have won 22 of their past 30 trips to Anaheim.
  • The Yankees are a perfect 6-0 in their past six games against a right-handed starting pitcher, while the Angels are 1-4 in their past five vs. RHP.

  • The Angels have posted a 1-7 record across their past eight following a loss, and they're 2-12 in the past 14 vs. AL East opponents.

New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: The Yankees ( -110) are on a roll, rallying Wednesday for their sixth consecutive victory, and they have their ace on the bump in this one. Look for the Bombers to grab the four-game series sweep against the Angels ( -104) and Cahill.

Against the spread: The Yankees ( -1.5, +144) are a strong play due to Tanaka's dominance against the Angels, and their overall offensive production lately despite a rash of injuries. The good news is they got Gary Sanchez back from the 10-day injured list Wednesday to give them one of their big bats back. The Halos ( +1.5, -168) are just too costly, and they cannot be trusted on their current skid.

Over/under: The UNDER8(-118) didn't come through Wednesday, as the Yankees made a rally late to push the total well over. The under is still 11-4 in the past 15 meetings in SoCal, while going 5-1 in Tanaka's past six starts against the Halos.
