Cincinnati Reds at New York Mets: Projected Starting Pitchers

RHP Tanner Roark vs. RHP Zack Wheeler

Roark has pitched to a 3.24 ERA through his first five starts of the year. He's struck out 24 and allowed just two home runs, but he's issued 11 free passes including three over five innings his last time out. He hasn't gone more than 5 1/3 innings in a single start this year as his pitch counts have been high. His BABIP is an uncharacteristically high .370, but he's stranding 81.6 percent of baserunners.

Wheeler has rung off three consecutive quality starts after being torched for 11 earned runs over 9 2/3 innings in his first two appearances of the year. His last time out was an 11-strikeout gem over seven scoreless innings, allowing zero walks and five hits.

Cincinnati Reds at New York Mets: By the Numbers

  • Both teams rank in the bottom half of the league in collective OPS against right-handed pitching.
  • The Mets have the third-worst bullpen in MLB with an ERA of 5.70 as a group. The Reds have the fourth-best mark at 3.53.
  • New York OF Michael Conforto is the best hitter in the right-handed split with an individual OPS of .976, ranking 27th in baseball.

  • The Reds have gone 6-20-1 against totals this year and just 3-10-1 as the road team. The Mets have played to the OVER in six of 11 home games.

Cincinnati Reds at New York Mets: Key Injuries

The Reds' offense is missing OF Matt Kemp and 2B Scooter Gennett for at least a couple more weeks each.

Mets 2B Robinson Cano underwent X-rays on his hand Sunday after being struck by a pitch but they returned negative. He's considered day-to-day for now. 2B Jed Lowrie and OF Yoenis Cespedes haven't played yet this year and RP Justin Wilson will be first eligible to return Tuesday.

Cincinnati Reds at New York Mets: Best Bet

Moneyline: Wheeler is the better pitcher in the matchup and the Mets are favored at -160 with him on the mound. He's been able to go deep into games and New York should be able to save its poor bullpen. Back the home team.

Against the spread: Each of Wheeler's two wins this year has been by more than two runs. Roll with New York at +124 to cover -1.5.

Over/under: Take the UNDER on 8 runs ( -118) with Cincinnati's poor record against the total.
