The Chicago Cubs (14-12) open an interleague set against the Seattle Mariners (18-13) at T-Mobile Park, formerly Safeco Field. While the M's have fired out of the chute with big-time power and offensive numbers, they actually have a 7-9 record so far through 16 games at home.

Chicago Cubs at Seattle Mariners: Projected Starting Pitchers

LHP Cole Hamels vs. RHP Felix Hernandez

Hamels puts his 3-0 record and 3.16 ERA on the line against King Felix in SoDo. Years ago this would have been a marquee pitching matchup, and Hamels has been holding his end of the bargain lately. He has registered 30 strikeouts over 31 1/3 innings with just nine walks and the opposition has just a .248 on-base percentage against him.

Hernandez has just two quality starts in his five outings so far, as he can still register the strikeouts. However, his velocity is down over the past couple of seasons and he has to be more crafty. So far, it's not working, as the opposition has a .315 OBP against him through 25 1/3 innings.

Chicago Cubs at Seattle Mariners: By the Numbers

  • The Cubs enter 9-3 in their past 12 games overall, while going 8-2 in the past 10 against teams with a winning overall record. They're also 5-1 in the past six on the road, including 5-0 in the past five away from home vs. RHP.
  • The Cubbies are a perfect 4-0 across Hamels' past four road assignments.

  • The Mariners are skidding lately, posting a 2-8 record across the past 10 home games while going 1-9 in the past 10 against teams with a winning overall mark.
  • Seattle is 0-5 in King Felix's past five interleague starts while going 1-6 in his past seven tries at home against teams with a winning overall mark.

Chicago Cubs at Seattle Mariners: Picks and Betting Tips

Moneyline: The Cubs ( -140) are rolling along, and they're worth backing even at moderate chalk on the road. The Mariners ( +122) are skidding hard, and one of the best hitters, OF Mitch Haniger, is a question mark due to a sore right shoulder. Roll with the Cubbies.

Against the spread: The visitors ( -1.5, +112) should be able to get it done on the road, but they won by one on the road Sunday in Arizona as a road favorite. They're just 3-6 on the run line in the past nine road games, so avoid. The Mariners ( +1.5, -130) are the play at home if you must play the run line.

Over/under: The OVER8.5(-110) is worth a roll of the dice. While the under is 11-5 in the past 16 starts for Hamels, the over is 4-1 in his past five road starts. The over is also 14-5 in the past 19 road games vs. RHP, and 19-8 in their past 27 road starts overall. The over is 3-0-1 in the past four home games, and 12-2 in their past 14 at home vs. LHP, and 10-1 in the past 11 overall against southpaws.
