Notre Dame at Virginia Tech: Three things to know

  1. It's been a tough go of it for Mike Bray's Irish this season, as they have yet to record consecutive wins at any point. They had a near-miss at North Carolina Jan. 2 in their most recent game, falling 66-65 as 10-point underdogs. It was their first cover since Dec. 12, snapping an 0-4 ATS skid.
  2. Notre Dame is 3-1 ATS in its past four games as an underdog of 6 or more points, including an outright win Dec. 12 at Kentucky. The Irish are a good free-throw shooting team, ranking 11th in the nation at 79.3 percent, but they're also just 202nd in the country with 71.4 points per outing.
  3. Virginia Tech might be in danger of dropping out of the Top 25 after a 73-71 midweek loss at Louisville. The Hokies did hang on for the cover, though, and are 4-1 ATS across the past five. All five of the outings also cashed the Over, and the Hokies have gone Over the total in eight of 10 so far.

Notre Dame at Virginia Tech: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Virginia Tech 76, Notre Dame 67

Money line (ML)

Virginia Tech (-350) is playing the better basketball of these two schools at the moment, but risking three and a half times your potential return is not a recommended long-term strategy. Even if you hit at an impressive 70 percent clip, you'll be just even. AVOID, and look to the spread instead.

Against the spread (ATS)

VIRGINIA TECH -7.5 (-110) is the play on its home floor, as it has covered four of the past five overall, including three of four at home. The Hokies also have taken advantage of the lesser teams, going 13-3 ATS in the previous 16 against clubs with a winning percentage of .400 or lower.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 138.5 (-115) is the play until further notice on Va. Tech games. The Hokies have hit the Over in six in a row. They're so-so on offense, going for 75.1 PPG, while allowing 65.1 PPG. However, they're not very good at defending against the 3, and that's an area the Irish can be quite effective. In fact, Notre Dame ranks 23rd in the country, hitting 38.9% of its 3-point attempts.
