Fantasy football draft: Where to target New York Jets RB Michael Carter

Jess Root
Sportsbook Wire

The New York Jets selected RB Michael Carter in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft after a productive college career at North Carolina. Below, we look at Michael Carter's 2021 fantasy football average draft position (ADP) and where you should draft him.

Carter topped 1,000 rushing yards each of his final two seasons at North Carolina. He topped 1,500 total yards in 2020.

He will likely factor into the Jets' offense as a rookie but will have to earn playing time under new head coach Robert Saleh. What does that mean in terms of his fantasy value in 2021?

Carter is 67th overall with an average draft position of 58.10. He has been selected as high as seventh overall and as low as No. 152. He is rostered in 97% of leagues.

He is ranked 25th among running backs, just behind Las Vegas Raiders RB Josh Jacobs and just ahead of Miami Dolphins RB Myles Gaskin.

Where should you take Michael Carter in your fantasy football draft?

Carter will not enter his rookie season as the starter. Free-agent addition RB Tevin Coleman will start the season in that role. However, Coleman missed eight games due to injury last year and has never had more than 167 rushing attempts in a season.

Carter is used to sharing the load on offense, as he split carries with Javonte Williams (now with the Denver Broncos) in college. His explosiveness and ability to catch the ball are intriguing and could give you spikes in production from week to week, especially once he settles into an increased role.

He's an intriguing pick in PPR leagues, as he can catch the ball and will have a rookie quarterback. Saleh also used to be the offensive coordinator under head coach Kyle Shanahan with the San Francisco 49ers and should know how to use running backs in the passing game.

Nonetheless, in terms of value, he should not be more than your RB2 and probably should be an RB3. Wait until the middle and late rounds.
