Apple on Monday said it sold 3 million iPads in the three days since the launch of the iPad Mini. The figure includes both the Mini and the refreshed fourth generation full-sized iPad.

That's double the first weekend sales for the third generation iPad in March, the company said.

iPad Minis are "practically sold out," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a press release. The company did not specifically break out sales of the Mini.

The Mini launched in the U.S. and 33 other countries, starting at $329. The version available now only features Wi-Fi, with models supporting 4G wireless networks arriving in a few weeks.

Demand for iPad Mini exceeded the initial supply, Apple said. According to Apple's website, online orders for the Mini ship currently ship in two weeks.

Apple fans flocked to Apple stores this past weekend to scoop up a Mini, although Reuters and others reported that lines were shorter than the average Apple launch, including the most recent iPhone 5 in September.

The iPad Mini is more than half the weight and a quarter the size of the traditional iPad, featuring a 7.9-inch multi-touch display. It also boasts a front-facing FaceTime HD camera, rear-facing 5-megapixel camera that records 1080p HD video.

Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, has projected Mini sales of 5 million by the end of the year.

The new 9.8-inch standard iPad has a faster processor and improved HD video camera. It replaces the third-generation iPad, which went on sale in the spring, and starts at $499.
