Wake up to the modern age

Remember those oval-shaped old-fashioned alarm clocks — the ones with two bells near the top? Maybe you used one when visiting grandpa to make sure you woke up at 5 a.m. to go fishing. Chances are that vintage alarm clock didn't sport an iPhone dock, Bluetooth connectivity or a USB slot. Fast-forward to 2012 and check out the retro-styled Tick Tock alarm clocks from Edifier. Depending on the model you choose, the alarm clocks can connect to your favorite audio devices via a docking station, wireless Bluetooth technology or media slots. No matter the model, decent sound is delivered via a front speaker and two speaker "bells.'' Intuitive controls and LED icons make it relatively easy to set an alarm, find a good FM station and play music from a connected audio player.

Priced at about $80, the Tick Tock Dock model has an FM radio, a pivoting dock for an iPod or iPhone, a jack for other audio devices and an AC adapter. One handy feature: The dock is forgiving enough to generally allow connections without removing a device from its protective case. Other options include a Tick Tock Bluetooth model with Bluetooth connectivity, an FM radio and audio jack for $80 and a Tick Tock SD/USB/FM Radio model with an SD card reader, a USB input, FM radio and an audio jack for $70.

Why not shower to the sound of music?

Maybe you do your best singing in the shower. Now you can do some very good listening in the shower as well thanks to a Bluetooth-enabled showerhead from Kohler. The Moxie Showerhead has a removable and rechargeable speaker capsule that plays music streaming from a connected Bluetooth audio device. Once the showerhead is installed, you can shower while listening to your favorite playlist streaming from a paired audio device. The speaker capsule, which contains a rechargeable lithium battery, is held in place, via a strong magnet. When removed, the capsule can play music in other parts of the house and also be connected to a USB cable for recharging. The showerhead will go on sale this month for about $200.

Avoid the trip

Does this sound familiar? You check into a hotel and the only outlet available to charge your iPhone or iPod is on the wall near the bathroom door, away from any table or ledge. Then, of course, you get up in the middle of the night and trip over the charging cable or even the device itself. That's where a handy new accessory called the pi Mount comes in. Here's how it works: Plug your Apple adapter into an outlet. Slip the pi Mount on top of the adapter. Connect your iPhone to the adapter's charging cable and place the device — with or without its case — in the mount's cradle so that the screen is facing forward. You'll now be able to monitor the charging process without worrying about tripping over any wires or worse, tripping over your device. The mount costs about $9.

Case protects headsets

Next time you're tempted to throw your pricey Bluetooth headset in your bag, think again. Getting tossed around with your other gear can't be good for your headset's fragile components. Taking time to stash your headset in a protective case makes sense. If you don't have a case, or lost your headset's original case, the BluCase provides a viable option.
