SAN FRANCISCO — Millions of apps are available on Google Play and Apple's App Store, but which ones do you use more often than any other? If you're like most, it's Facebook by a mile.

According to a new survey of Internet users by ComScore Media Metrix, Facebook was the most used app among both Apple and Android users in September.

The rest of the list:

• YouTube: The gateway to watching millions of videos on phones.

• Google Play: The Google store for downloading new apps, movies and TV shows.

• Google Search: Beyond basic search, the Google search app also is the gateway to "Google Now," the service that monitors your Google searches and offers news topics you might be interested in, calendar information and movie listings.

Damon Minor of San Francisco likes the Waze traffic app.

• Pandora: The online music network with personalized radio stations.

• Facebook Messenger: The controversial decision to split Facebook's messaging app into a separate entity hasn't hurt usage: millions opted for the stand-alone app to communicate with friends.

• Google Maps: The world's most popular vehicle to find directions.

• Gmail: Many people use the standalone e-mail app to check their latest.

• Instagram: Facebook's photo app is the world's most popular photo sharing program.

• Apple Maps: Apple yanked Google Maps off the iPhone in 2012 to negative reviews; but the app has greatly improved since.

What apps didn't make the list?

Hugely popular ones like Evernote, Snapchat, What's App? and others that have millions and millions of users.
