Monica Lewinsky is back in the news cycle this year, but instead of being the butt of everyone’s jokes, she’s reclaiming the narrative around the affair between her and President Clinton. Lewinsky recently co-produced FX’s scripted series Impeachment: American Crime Story that followed the affair, the people involved in its cover-up, and the subsequent investigation, and on top of that, she has produced a new documentary that touches on her experiences called 15 Minutes of Shame.

The documentary, which premiered on HBO Max on October 7, explores the phenomenon of public shaming from the perspective of those who have lived through it, as well as those who perpetrate it in the media and beyond. Lewinsky was 22 years old when she had a consensual affair with President Bill Clinton, and she has been relentlessly scrutinized and joked about in the years since. She has spoken openly about her PTSD, a result of the relentless shaming she suffered after her affair came to light, and she has emerged as an advocate for others in similar positions.

What is 15 Minutes of Shame about?

15 Minutes of Shame is a documentary that explores the way people, both public personalities and private citizens, have to navigate harassment online and in the media. While some versions of public shaming result in incremental progress toward fair treatment, public shaming is more typically weaponized to hurt individual people. Director Max Joseph embedded himself with people who have experienced everything from cyber-bullying to media scrutiny and also addresses the way that social and digital media perpetuate a never-ending news cycle that thrives on calling people out.

Executive produced by Monica Lewinsky, the film explores why we as a society love to cancel people, and what happens when public shaming goes too far and peoples’ livelihoods and lives suffer as a consequence.
