President Obama's campaign and Democratic allies raised $181 million in September, their highest monthly haul of the election season.
In an e-mail to supporters, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina also reported that the effort "surpassed 10 million donations so far in 2012 ... a historic record for grassroots politics."
The $181 million in September came from 1.8 million Americans, Messina said, "more than 567,000 of whom gave for the first time."
The Obama campaign manager said the average donation was $53, with 98% of the contributions at $250 or less.
The Obama campaign -- which had been out-raised by opponent Mitt Romney and the Republicans during the early summer months -- raised $114 million in August, to Romney's $111 million.
Romney and the GOP have not yet reported their September fundraising totals.
Messina also reported:
-- In September, we opened our 100th field office in Ohio -- and in Florida, too.
-- This week, our team registered 10,000 voters in Florida. In one day.
-- In Iowa, where you can vote early, more than 105,000 people have already voted -- 62 percent of those voters are Democrats, compared to just 20 percent who are Republicans.
