Obama'a day: Honoring Cesar Chavez

USATODAY
President Obama campaigns in Los Angeles.

Good morning from The Oval, on a day that President Obama honors Latino icon Cesar Chavez.

The president visits Keene, Calif., near Bakersfield, to designate the Cesar Chavez National Monument in honor of the late farmworker, labor leader and civil rights activist. Obama will tour the Memorial Garden that is the centerpiece of the monument, and deliver remarks.

The site served as Chavez's home and workplace, as well the national headquarters of the United Farm Workers, from the early 1970s until his death in 1993; it includes his grave site.

Obama will discuss Chavez's legacy as "a civil rights icon who gave a voice to poor and disenfranchised workers everywhere," said White House spokesman Jay Carney.

The Hispanic vote is a big prize in the current election between Obama and Mitt Romney.

It's also a fundraising kind of day for the president, with three events in San Francisco.

Romney delivers a major foreign policy address today in Virginia.

The Obama team is looking to Vice President Biden to regain its debate standing.
