Obama to backers: Be 'almost obsessive' about election

USATODAY
President Obama

President Obama is telling backers to get intense about the election.

"\We're only going to do it if everybody is almost obsessive for the next 29 days," the president told supporters Monday night in San Francisco.

Some observers have questioned how much Obama really wants re-election, given last week's listless debate performance against Mitt Romney.

The president assured donors gathered at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium that "I am pretty competitive and I very much intend to win this election."

And he had some assignments for some of his supporters.

"Most of you have contributed to the campaign, but there is more that you can do over the next 29 days," Obama said. "There's a phone call you can make. There's an e-mail you can send. There is a trip into Nevada you can do to knock on doors. There are cousins and uncles and friends in battleground states all across the country."

Added the president: "You need to mobilize every resource that you've got to make sure that we bring this home. And I'm confident we will, but we can't take anything for granted."

No, they can't -- new polls show a much tighter Obama-Romney race.
