Hurricane Sandy has claimed a presidential tradition: The White House Halloween celebration.

President Obama's staff said hurricane damage to Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area forced cancellation of the annual event.

This may give Obama and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie something more to talk about when they tour Sandy damage on the Jersey shore later Wednesday.

Christie signed an executive order postponing Halloween in his state until Nov. 5, the night before Election Day. The governor said it's not yet safe to have children out trick-or-treating.
