Obama schedule now up in the air

President Obama has a full agenda this week -- including fiscal cliff negotiations and a secretary of State opening -- but his schedule is on hold in the wake of the school shootings in Connecticut.

His week-ahead schedule lists only private meetings on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Details regarding the rest of the week's schedule will be released as they become available," the White House says.

The uncertainty comes amid reports that Obama will soon nominate Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., to be the next secretary of State, replacing the soon-to-retire Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, are trying to negotiate a debt reduction deal designed to head off the so-called "fiscal cliff," a series of automatic tax hikes and budget cuts that would kick in if no agreement is reached.

Obama had planned to visit Maine on Wednesday to promote his fiscal cliff plan, but that trip has been canceled.

The president has already added one event to his schedule: a Sunday evening interfaith vigil in Newtown, Conn., where 20 children and six adults were slain Friday at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The shooter and the shooter's mother also died.

How the shooting might further affect Obama's schedule is not known, especially as supporters call for more gun control legislation.
