Obama's day: Lunch with Congress

President Obama plots legislative strategy in a Friday lunch with congressional leaders, including newly empowered Republicans.

The president breaks bread with 16 congressional leaders from both parties, three days after elections in which the Republicans won control of the Senate and expanded their majority in the House.

Obama has pledged to work with Republicans, but made clear he will not abandon his plans on the hot button issues of immigration and health care.

Republicans have also pledged cooperation, but vowed to roll back parts of Obama's health care law. They have also warned Obama that he will poison the well if he issues executive orders that would legalize the status of migrants who are in the United States illegally.

The White House lunch will feature Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the Republican who becomes Senate majority leader when the new session opens early next year. Obama will also speak with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, who will have more members on the Republican side next year.

Obama and lawmakers will also discuss an agenda for the current, lame duck Congress that meets later this month. That includes budget issues, as well as authority for U.S. military action against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

Before his lunch with Congress, Obama meets with members of his Cabinet, also to discuss the way forward in light of the elections.
