Fog socks mid-Atlantic airports with long delays

Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY

Fog and poor visibility were creating flight delays at several major airports across the mid-Atlantic region as of 9:20 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, Oct. 3).

Delays at New York LaGuardia were averaging 2 hours and 13 minutes while Newark delays were averaging 1 hour and 50 minutes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration's delay map. Conditions were slightly better in Philadelphia, where delays were being reported at an average of 48 minutes, according to the FAA.

At Baltimore/Washington International, delays averaging about 40 minutes were being reported, though the cause there was ongoing runway construction, according to the FAA.

Thick fog and low visibility were impacting much of the region this morning (Oct. 3), but forecasts called for clear skies to emerge in most areas this afternoon. Given that forecast, the delays at the mid-Atlantic airports were likely to gradually ease throughout the day.

Still, any improvement won't come before this morning's delays ripple out to other parts of the country. Even flights from cities under sunny skies could be impacted by this morning's delays in the Northeast. For example, a St. Louis-to-Denver flight could become delayed or canceled if the aircraft (or crew) scheduled to fly it gets bogged in the foggy Northeast.
