Polish carrier LOT became the first European carrier to take delivery of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner yesterday (Nov. 14) at Boeing's production line facility in Everett, Wash.

The carrier will debut the jet this December on short-haul European routes — a move to help cabin and ground crews familiarize themselves with the new aircraft — before transitioning it to long-haul routes.

LOT says Chicago, New York and Toronto will be the first long-haul routes to land Dreamliner service. Earlier this year, LOT said it planned to begin phasing the Dreamliner into its existing Chicago flight schedule sometime in January.

As for Boeing, The Associated Press adds that LOT's first Dreamliner is "the 35th 787 Boeing has delivered overall, and 803 more are on order. Boeing says the 787 is the first mid-size plane capable of flying long-range routes, allowing airlines to open new, non-stop flights."
