Delta to hire 400 flight attendants

Delta Air Lines is searching for 400 new flight attendants.

Delta Air Lines is searching for 400 new flight attendants.

And so far, it has received 22,000 applications, at the rate of two per minute, CEO Richard Anderson told workers in a weekly recorded message, according to Bloomberg.

The applicants will be interviewed in January and begin flying in June, a peak travel season.

"We're hunting for foreign-language speakers as we continue to expand to all points around the globe," Anderson said, according to Bloomberg. "We are experiencing a phenomenal response to the job posting."

Roughly one-third of the hires will work on overseas cities, the Associated Press reports. Languages the airline is looking for expertise in: Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin, and Hindi.

The last time the Atlanta-based carrier hired flight attendants in October 2012 it received 100,000 applications for 1,000 jobs, Bloomberg reports.

Other airlines recently have put out the call for new flight attendants and have been flooded with applications.

Last month, American Airlines said it would hire 1,500 flight attendants. More than 20,000 people applied.

The AP points out that Delta is not growing despite the hiring spree. "It has said it will do the same amount of flying next year as it did in 2012," the AP reports.
