Nearly 6,000 flights delayed, 1,400+ canceled across the US as severe weather moves east

A multi-day storm system hit the East Coast and is causing flight delays and cancellations during a busy travel day ahead of Passover and Easter.

As of 6:30 p.m. ET, 5,906 flights within, into or out of the United States had been delayed and 1,446 cancelled, according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.

The National Weather Service posted the following advisory on its website:

"Severe thunderstorms capable of widespread damaging winds and a few tornadoes will shift across the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast states today and tonight. Heavy rainfall and a risk of flash flooding is also present as tropical moisture streams north along the East Coast. The highest threat exists from the Carolinas into New England."

Charlotte, Miami and Newark are experiencing the most flight cancellations into and out of those airports: 288 canceled flights at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, 164 at Miami International Airport and 181 at Newark Liberty International Airport.
